Turn up the Green in your car

I love a good statistic as much as the next person but I've got to tell you, when I came across this shocker while researching topics for today's E-newsletter, I wasn't that thrilled.

Did you know the average car emits 4 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year?

That's twice the weight of your average car! Nearly 10 kilos every day!

And apparently cars are responsible for generating over half the air pollutants in Perth.

An interesting topic for a car salesman to point out don't you think?

Well you got me. There's no way you'll hear me telling everyone to get rid of their cars to cut pollution and save the planet any time soon.

Otherwise I'd be eating out of rubbish bins wouldn't I?
Seriously now though, living without a car just isn't practical for country folk like us but what I really do want to share with you is some good solid tips on things you can do to help reduce the impact of cars on our environment.

Five tips for a Greener Car

1. Service your car every six months or 10,000kms.

An ABS survey found 25 per cent of households serviced their cars once a year or less. That means a quarter of cars on the road are generating more emissions than they should be due to poor maintenance.

2. Check your tyre pressure every two weeks.
Driving on tyres with 50kPA decreases fuel efficiency.

3. Use air-conditioning only when necessary.

4. Offset your CO2 emissions by purchasing carbon credits.

5. FINALLY, buy Green!

How could I neglect to mention here Honda's Civic Hybrid? It's an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle which in certain conditions can even run exclusively on electric power.

You can find out more about the Civic Hybrid here or visit the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide to compare the Green credentials of various new cars.

John's yarn wins free fuel

A keen, bright young man with a full wallet had decided to buy a brand new car - his first!

Of course he went along to his local Honda dealer where all the best cars live .He browsed the car lot and eventually he was drawn to a rather garish green car.

The salesman was secretly delighted (a) He'd had no "selling" to do and (b) the car had been in the showroom for months and just wouldn't sell.

The majority of would-be buyers just didn't like the colour.

Naturally the astute dealer realised the problem and advised his staff that there was a generous discount available on this vehicle and a bonus for the salesman that could sell it.

Scarcely containing his pleasure the salesman rapidly closed the deal and the appropriate paperwork was  signed and sealed. The young man thrilled with his purchase.

As he was about to drive off the salesman just had to ask the final question. "Until today no one has shown the slightest interest in that particular car but you didn't hesitate. Was it the discount or were you overwhelmed by my salesmanship?"

"It's quite simple," the young man replied. "A good car is never a bad colour!"
