I have discovered that having a fitness appraisal is a bit like buying a car!
Course, coming from a car salesman you'd expect that.
In most situations you'll find me looking for a way to turn the conversation round to my favourite subject.
Anyway, recently I decided it was time to get fit so I trotted along to that magnificent local facility of ours, the South West Sports Centre.
There I had to sit in a little room with a very nice lady who asked me lots of personal questions before taking me on a tour of the place - told you! Just like buying a car.
After that I was presented with a rather intimidating looking gym program and I was on my way.
Several mornings a week - always having been the sort of person who likes to catch the early bird out by getting the worm first - I'd be pounding the treadmill at the sports centre before work.
I have to admit I did start to quite enjoy the whole thing until my knees starting playing up and put an end to all that.
Now I need someone to give me a kick in the pants again and I reckon I've found just the person.
This livewire from Perth Kylie Mathieson who will be the star attraction at our upcoming Girls Night Out tells me:
"If you've forgotten how it feels to be healthy and aren't that motivated - you soon will be!"
Scared? Me too!
She's a girl with a whole lot of energy to burn so I'm a bit worried now about what might be in store for me.
Seriously though, good health is something we all need to working towards so I'm going to hand this month's newsletter over to Kylie to share her 5 Healthy Laws.
Healthy Law 1
Health is directly proportional to our overall wellbeing and happiness. Like a pebble thrown into a pond, the greater attention we pay to our personal health, the greater the 'ripple effect' on the other areas of our lives.
Healthy Law 2 - Health is more than physical
For some, the key to improved physical fitness can lie with better nutritional habits, a more positive mental state or greater support from family and friends. It is therefore important that we see health as being an interrelated web of physical, nutritional, mental and spiritual components.
Healthy Law 3 - Health is not a 'one size fits all' prescription
While fitness facilities provide a fantastic resource for improving fitness, they are not the only way! (Now she's got my attention! - ed.) Healthy opportunities need to be varied, creative and cater for individual needs wherever possible.
Healthy Law 4 - Health begins in the mind
Most of us know what to do but struggle to muster the motivation to actually do it. The bridge between knowing and doing lies in the mind, how we use it and the emotional connection to what we want. Psychology plays a key role in starting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and therefore should be an important inclusion in health and wellness programming.
Healthy Law 5 - Health improvement is driven by planning THEN by doing
Apart from obvious benefits, strategic planning helps eliminate too much additional thinking when other responsibilities tug at us. This builds your reserve of self-discipline exponentially and makes a healthy lifestyle that much easier to attain!
