MORE GOOD NEWS AND SCIENCE ON ACAI JUICE |
A study done at the USDA Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center, University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas claims that
Acai juice attenuates or lessens atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.
In an article published in the June 2011 edition of the journal Atherosclerosis. The authors of this
article discovered that acai juice could reduce lipid peroxidation through boosting antioxidant
enzymes and inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine production. These results demonstrate that acai
juice act as major underlying mechanisms for the athero-protective effects. These studies were
conducted on mice models and show very promising cross-over to human application.
What all of this means is that the antioxidants found naturally occurring in acai juice work to
inhibit the inflammation found within the arteries. This kind of inflammation can damage artery
walls, promote the dangerous build-up of plaque and make the arteries less pliable. Hardened
arteries or atherosclerosis is a common disorder. It occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other
substances build up in the walls of arteries and form hard structures called plaques.
Over time, these plaques can block the arteries and cause symptoms and problems throughout the body.
Hardening of the arteries does not cause symptoms until blood flow to part of the body becomes
slowed or blocked.
If the arteries to the heart become narrow, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop.
This can cause chest pain (stable angina), shortness of breath, and other symptoms.
Narrowed or blocked arteries may also cause problems and symptoms in your intestines, kidneys,
legs, and brain. To help prevent hardening of the arteries, make the following lifestyle changes:
- Avoid fatty foods. Eat well-balanced meals that are low in fat and cholesterol.
Include several daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Acai is a reasonable dietary supplement
to include for a healthy lifestyle. Adding fish to your diet at least twice a week may be helpful.
However, do not eat fried fish.
- Limit how much alcohol you drink -- one drink a day for women, two a day for men.
- Exercise for 30 minutes a day if you are not overweight, and for 60 - 90 minutes a day if you
are overweight.
- Quit smoking -- this is the single most important change you can make to reduce your risk of
heart disease and stroke.
- Get your blood pressure checked every 1 - 2 years before age 50 and yearly after age 50.
Have your blood pressure checked more often if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or
you have had a stroke. Talk to your doctor about how often you should have your blood pressure checked.
This study along with the others we have shared in our newsletters and on our website
www.brazilbotaniclas.com adds to the growing body of
scientific evidence demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effects of acai and the power
of the antioxidants in acai juice.

Dr. Tim: The World's
Foremost Authority on Coconut Water! |
Dr. Tim, CEO of Dr. Tim's Juices and creator of Better Than Water, Vitela, ISO-5 and now COCO-5
is considered as the worlds foremost authority on coconut water. Dr. Tim is a surgeon, board
certified, professor of anatomy, biology and physiology, research scientist, formulator and CEO
of Dr. Tim's Juices a healthy beverage company. But by the look of his office you might think
he has only one thing on his mind these days; coconuts!
Dr. Tim has traveled the world searching for exotic fruits with health benefits to
create healthy drinks. "It was on one of my tips into the Amazon where I discovered first
hand the hydrating health benefits of coconut water". Although Dr. Tim had consumed coconut
water years before he wasn't fully aware of just how good coconut water is for your body.
"I have to admit I was not a fan of the taste of coconut water but after realizing how much
better I felt after drinking it I knew that I could do something with this". After returning
from the Amazon Dr. Tim went to work dedicating the next 6 years to learning and knowing
everything he could about coconut water.
Dr. Tim has travelled from the South Pacific to Southeast Asia, from South America to the
Middle East to research coconut water including coconut water from Africa, India and Indonesia.
"I have been experimenting with coconut water in many different ways over the past 6 years"
says Dr. Tim. Dr. Tim points out that his formulations and flavor profiles have been tested
and used at every level of sports from the amatuer to the elite professional. In fact the 2010
Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks are entering their 4th year using Dr. Tim's coconut
water sports drinks. "Our formulations have been so successful that we have also created an
energy drink and a protein recovery drink."
Taste is important. While coconut water drinks are commanding more shelf space,
taste remains a problem. Dr. Tim says "we have conducted hundreds of taste tests and have
concluded that while there exists a niche of passionate consumers who love the taste of
coconut water the average person is far less enchanted by its flavor."
Overall coconut water drinks are not preferred as a sport drink replacement and if you
have tasted one you know why. Coconut water has a very raw, fresh-grass taste that has a
heavy mouth feel and leaves a rather unpleasant after taste. "I saw this aspect of coconut
water as the most intriguing and where we could make the biggest improvement." Dr. Tim's Juices
as a company prides itself in the technology and skill they have in turning bad tasting healthy
fruits into great tasting healthy beverages while maintaining the integrity of the original fruit.
The success behind Dr. Tim's coconut water products is both taste and performance.
Dr. Tim quoined the term "5 Essential Electrolytes". "Yes, it was shortly after discovering
that coconut water had been used as a replacement for IV solutions during the 2nd world war
in the south pacific that I focused on the electrolyte content of coconut water." Electrolytes
are the chemicals in our blood and other body fluids that act as gating mechanisms for the flow
of fluids between cells. Without the proper concentrations and balance of these electrolytes
fluids can be kept out of cells and thereby result in dehydration that can be mild to life
threatening. Although several other coconut water companies use Dr. Tim's reference to 5
essential electrolytes "they fail to recognize the ones that really make the difference"
says Dr. Tim.
Coconut water has even more to give beyond the naturally occurring electrolytes. Coconut water
also contains protein, amino acids, iron and B vitamins. Some say that coconut water is a
craze or fad, but Dr. Tim says that he will continue to be the ambassador for coconut water.
Dr. Tim has appeared on TV and radio, written numerous articles, is a popular speaker and can
be found on Youtube and Facebook validating the goodness of coconut water. Because of the
depth of his research and work Dr. Tim truly is the world's foremost authority on coconut water.

Nopal Cactus plant normalizes blood sugar, treats diabetes & boosts
insulin sensitivity |
The prickly pear
cactus, otherwise known as the nopal cactus in Mexico exhibits multiple
medicinal effects that can be beneficial to many. Professor of
nutrition Winston F. Craig, Ph.D., Andrews University, in Michigan
claims that the prickly pear (nopal cactus) can help with diabetes,
lower blood sugar levels and offer other health benefits.
- The ability for the prickly pear cactus (nopal) to lower blood sugar has been well
documented by many studies. In traditional Mexican medicine, nopal is
used for treating type-2 Diabetes.
- Mexican researchers found that
people with non-insulin-dependent diabetes given broiled nopal stems
experienced a large drop in blood sugar levels.
- It has been shown that
daily consumption of 250mg of this plant will lower total cholesterol
and LDL cholesterol levels, according to a recent study. HDL cholesterol
and triglyceride levels were not affected.
More research on the nopal cactus was reported In the January 1988
edition of the journal Diabetes Care. Studies of the Hypoglycemic
effect of Opuntia streptacantha Lemaire (Nopal) in NIDDM were conducted
at Department of Internal Medicine, Hospital de Especialidades del
Centro Médico La Raza, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Mexico D.F.
by Frati-Munari AC, Gordillo BE, Altamirano P and Ariza CR.
The study showed that the stems of O. streptacantha Lem. (Nopal) cause
a hypoglycemic effect in patients with NIDDM (non-insulin dependent
diabetes) . The mechanism of this effect is not known, but increased
insulin sensitivity is suggested.
This same team in 1991 demonstrated the Influence of nopal intake upon
fasting glycemia in type II diabetics and healthy subjects. They found
that acute hypoglycemic effect of nopal was observed in patients with
NIDDM but not in healthy subjects. This means that the effect of the
nopal on study subjects who had NIDDM or diabetes showed that it helped
to decrease their blood sugar levels.
Still more research on the effects of raw and cooked nopal (Opuntia
ficus indica) ingestion on growth and profile of total cholesterol,
lipoproteins, and blood glucose in rats has been conducted. Researchers
from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey,
México found that rats fed raw nopal at 12% concentration levels had a
34% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels; thus, it was concluded that raw
nopal had a potentially beneficial effect for hyper-cholesterolemic
individuals. Also that Rats fed the 12% concentration of nopal had
lower weight gains (P < 0.05) when compared with counterparts fed 6%
nopal or the control diet.
Nopal juice has recently been recommended for a variety of disorders including metabolic,
cardiovascular, and digestive. Over 12,000 years ago Ancient Mexican cultures originally
began consuming the Nopal cactus for its nutritional qualities and ultimately adopted the
Nopal cactus as a healing food. Over the last two decades modern science and research has
increasingly focused on identifying the beneficial elements of many different indigenous and
traditional therapies including Nopal. The Nopal cactus has rightfully garnered this attention
and has demonstrated some remarkable findings.

One of the most common ailments that afflicts the
human foot is the dreaded ingrown toenail. Just saying those words conjures up thoughts of painful,
tender, red, swollen, throbbing, hideous mass of toe flesh and toenail. So what is an ingrown
toenail? An ingrown toenail is a nail typically on the great toe that becomes incurvated or grows
too long and puts pressure on the flesh and nerves under the nail. The great toe has nerves that
go up both sides of the toe with branches that underlie the edges of your toenail. Your big toenail
is the largest nail structure on your body. Toenails are are thought to provide protection to the
tiny fragile bone called the distal phalanx that sits just under the nail. The toenail consists
of a matrix or root from which the nail grows. The lunula or half moon pink base that you can
see closest to the skin on your digit is a part of this. The rest of the nail although attached
is pretty much dead keratin. It is made from the same protein that makes hair. Toenails and
fingernails are dynamic structures meaning that they grow constantly and need to be trimmed and
cared for regularly. It is when the nail grows too long or curves around and underneath on the
edges that ingrown toenails emerge. This is painful in and of itself alone. However they can
become worse when the nail actually penetrates the skin and creates a wound. This wound is
easily infected by common bacterial organisms that live on your skin. You can tell if it is
infected by the way it looks, feels and yes, smells. If it is infected then the skin will be red,
you may see pus or other clear drainage, it may have a distinct foul odor and of course it will
be super sensitive. Beware that you don't let this condition go unchecked because that infection
can spread up into your foot and even poison your body. Red streaking up the toe and foot should
be the alarm that will send you to the emergency room. If you have this condition you should
definitely see your foot doctor and take care of it. Your foot doctor can take care of any
infections as well as resolve your ingrown nails permanently.
