September 2011 We
are back from taking a break from our newsletter this summer. I hope you have had a chance
to enjoy this summer in-spite of the economy and the weather.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those
who were in the path of hurricane Irene. This has been a unique summer
with record high temperatures across the Midwest and cooler temps in the
West. Now we are only days from the official end of the summer season
and in addition to that school has started or will soon start again.
Here in the deserts of southern Utah we will see 100+ degree for awhile
yet and really look forward to the evenings cooling off a bit.
I have some big news for you; we have released our newest Super
Juice. We now offer Dr. Tim’s Sonoran Red Nopal juice. This nopal juice
has the highest concentration of nopal fruit and pad mixed in a
delightfully unique mango flavor. It is thick and rich in pulp. Buy a
bottle and try some. Also we have completed our move into our spacious
and lovely new office and warehouse. With over 5x’s the space we once
occupied we are now even more capable of handling your orders and
answering your questions.

Pineapple: The new Youth Fruit! |
Researchers at the University of Hawaii at Munoa say that they are
looking at pineapples as the new youth fruit. Besides being used as a
great meat tenderizer pineapple holds some other secrets to staying
young that may benefit all of us. Dr. Christopher at the University of
Hawaii at Munoa has been researching pineapples for the last decade and
has discovered the mechanism for the ripening process of the pineapple.
Researchers say it is here that the secret to a more youthful look can
be found. They claim that there are enzymes in the pineapple that cause
aging of the cells. These enzymes are kept in check by a protein called
cistatin. The cistatin protein links up to the aging enzyme and hangs
on to it keeping the fruit young until it gets cut off. Once it is
removed the fruit begins to decay or age.
Dr. Christopher says that the ripening of the pineapple is
similar to the auto-degenerative disease process in people such as
Ahlziemers , Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease. He says that this
secret to youth found in the pineapple can decrease the symptoms of
inflammation in arthritis in your joints. He even goes so far to say
that it may be possible to stay young longer. More research needs to be
done in order to isolate this process from the pineapple.
We use Pineapple as one of the two juices we add to our exotic
juices to support the flavor profile of the respective juice. We know
about the antioxidant power of pineapple and now you know about
pineapples’ youth effect.

Nopal Cactus plant normalizes blood sugar, treats diabetes & boosts
insulin sensitivity |
The prickly pear
cactus, otherwise known as the nopal cactus in Mexico exhibits multiple
medicinal effects that can be beneficial to many. Professor of
nutrition Winston F. Craig, Ph.D., Andrews University, in Michigan
claims that the prickly pear (nopal cactus) can help with diabetes,
lower blood sugar levels and offer other health benefits.
- The ability for the prickly pear cactus (nopal) to lower blood sugar has been well
documented by many studies. In traditional Mexican medicine, nopal is
used for treating type-2 Diabetes.
- Mexican researchers found that
people with non-insulin-dependent diabetes given broiled nopal stems
experienced a large drop in blood sugar levels.
- It has been shown that
daily consumption of 250mg of this plant will lower total cholesterol
and LDL cholesterol levels, according to a recent study. HDL cholesterol
and triglyceride levels were not affected.
More research on the nopal cactus was reported In the January 1988
edition of the journal Diabetes Care. Studies of the Hypoglycemic
effect of Opuntia streptacantha Lemaire (Nopal) in NIDDM were conducted
at Department of Internal Medicine, Hospital de Especialidades del
Centro Médico La Raza, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Mexico D.F.
by Frati-Munari AC, Gordillo BE, Altamirano P and Ariza CR.
The study showed that the stems of O. streptacantha Lem. (Nopal) cause
a hypoglycemic effect in patients with NIDDM (non-insulin dependent
diabetes) . The mechanism of this effect is not known, but increased
insulin sensitivity is suggested.
This same team in 1991 demonstrated the Influence of nopal intake upon
fasting glycemia in type II diabetics and healthy subjects. They found
that acute hypoglycemic effect of nopal was observed in patients with
NIDDM but not in healthy subjects. This means that the effect of the
nopal on study subjects who had NIDDM or diabetes showed that it helped
to decrease their blood sugar levels.
Still more research on the effects of raw and cooked nopal (Opuntia
ficus indica) ingestion on growth and profile of total cholesterol,
lipoproteins, and blood glucose in rats has been conducted. Researchers
from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey,
México found that rats fed raw nopal at 12% concentration levels had a
34% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels; thus, it was concluded that raw
nopal had a potentially beneficial effect for hyper-cholesterolemic
individuals. Also that Rats fed the 12% concentration of nopal had
lower weight gains (P < 0.05) when compared with counterparts fed 6%
nopal or the control diet.
Nopal juice has recently been recommended for a variety of disorders including metabolic,
cardiovascular, and digestive. Over 12,000 years ago Ancient Mexican cultures originally
began consuming the Nopal cactus for its nutritional qualities and ultimately adopted the
Nopal cactus as a healing food. Over the last two decades modern science and research has
increasingly focused on identifying the beneficial elements of many different indigenous and
traditional therapies including Nopal. The Nopal cactus has rightfully garnered this attention
and has demonstrated some remarkable findings.

TOP 5 Foods to lower your cholesterol |
Here is the Mayo clinic’s list of the top 5 foods you can eat to help
lower your cholesterol.
#1. Oatmeal, oat bran and high-fiber foods. Our Dr. Tim’s Sonoran Red
Nopal juice is packed with the kind of fiber that will help you lower
your cholesterol.
#2. Fish and omega-3 fatty acids The highest levels of omega-3 fatty
acids are in:
- Mackerel
- Lake trout
- Herring
- Sardines
- Albacore tuna
- Salmon
- Halibut
#3. Walnuts, almonds and other nuts. Eating about a handful (1.5
ounces, or 42.5 grams) a day of most nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts,
peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts, may reduce
your risk of heart disease. Just make sure the nuts you eat aren't
salted or coated with sugar.
#4.Olive oil. Remember that the oil from acai fruit contains the same
elements as olive oil and is as good if not better than olive oil. Dr.
Tim’s Brazilian Acai has the acai oil naturally occurring in every
bottle. You can tell by the green color seen floating on the top of the
juice. This is the good stuff!
#5. Foods with added plant sterols or stanols. All of Dr. Tim’s juices
have naturally occurring plant sterols or stanols. This is one of the
reasons our juices work and why they are so good for you.

HEALTH ADVICE: Diabetic foot care | If
you have diabetes, you have blood sugar levels that are too high. Over
time, this can damage your nerves and the blood vessels in your body.
Damaged blood vessels mean your feet aren't getting enough oxygen or
blood. With nerve damage, you may experience burning pain or a loss of
feeling in your feet. It's why a small blister can turn into a major
problem in the form of an ulcer.
Infected ulcers mean a trip to the
hospital, and in severe cases, they can even lead to amputation. It's
easy to see why taking care of your feet when you have diabetes is an
important component of your overall health plan. Fortunately, there are
simple steps you can take to ensure that your tootsies stay in tip-top
shape.
See your Foot doctor and follow his/her advice. Make sure you
keep your blood sugar levels in check and follow his/her advice on diet,
exercise, and medication.
Give your feet a thorough once over. It's
vital you check them every day, as you could have a serious foot problem
but not be able to feel it. Look for sores, red spots, or infected
toenails. Call your Foot doctor right away if you see a cut, bruise, or
sore that doesn't start to heal after one day. Another tip: If you have
a difficult time bending to examine the bottom of your feet, grab a
mirror or enlist the help of family or friends.
Get the right footwear.
Find shoes and socks that fit well and comfortably--and wear them all
the time. Walking barefoot--even indoors—can be very dangerous and makes
it all too easy to step on something and injure your foot. It's also a
good idea to check the insides of your shoes before putting them on to
make sure they are smooth and there isn't anything in them that
shouldn't be there.
Wash your feet in lukewarm water. The water should
never be hot, and you should avoid soaking your feet, as it can dry your
skin out. A temperature of 90 to 95 degrees is safe.
After you've
washed your feet, it's a good time to trim your toenails, since nails
will be softer after a soak. Nails should be trimmed about once a week
and always clipped straight across--never cut into the corners of the
toenail, as this can lead to ingrown nails.
Keep your feet smooth by
applying lanolin lotion or petroleum jelly to the tops and bottoms of
your feet, paying special attention to your heels. If you notice the
skin is cracked, ask your Foot doctor for the best way to treat it.
Practice temperature control. Gearing up for a day at the beach? Make
sure you wear shoes to avoid walking on hot pavement. Also slather
sunscreen on top of your feet to prevent sunburn. If it's a frosty day,
wear lined boots to protect your feet from the outside chill or socks at
night if your feet tend to get cold while you sleep. When the
temperature drops, it's also a good idea to check your feet regularly
for frostbite if you've been out in the elements.
Move your feet.
Finally, do some toe wiggling for five minutes, two or three times a
day. You can also move your ankles up and down. These exercises will
help keep the blood flowing to your feet and legs. It's also smart to
avoid crossing your legs for long periods of time and to refrain from
wearing socks that are too tight. And when vegging out on the couch at
night, go ahead and prop your feet up--it'll help you relax and keep the
blood flowing to your feet!
 Mr. Paul Wilson is one
of our great customers who has been with us since the beginning. He has
been drinking Dr. Tim’s Juices for several years and loves them. Next
month Paul will celebrate his 84th birthday. He is very active and
plays golf 3 times a week. He has participated in the Huntsman World
Senior Games held in Saint George, Utah for over a decade and has the
medals to prove it. Paul attributes his current health condition to Dr.
Tim’s juices. He buys all 6 juices and blends them into his own mixture
into a pitcher and keeps it in his refrigerator. He says he never fails
to drink at least a 1/3 of a cup of the mix of juices daily. He says that he
doesn’t mix them all in equal amounts mainly because of the noni. He
says he recognizes the power of the noni but also realizes that a little
bit of noni goes along way especially when dealing with its flavor. But
he says he loves all of our juices and will continue to drink them
daily.
We thank Paul for sharing his story with us and for allowing us to share
it with you. In appreciation for this Paul will receive a 6 pack of our
juices free. If you will share your story and pictures with us and we
select you to be highlighted on one of our monthly newsletters and or
our website we will send to you a free 6 pack of your choice of our Dr.
Tim’s juices. Don’t be shy, you never know who you will inspire.
Thanks Paul for inspiring all of us!
