Welcome to our first ever e-newsletter! In the past we've sent out a paper newsletter, but to save paper (and to save money!) we're switching to the wide world of the web. As a friend of Davidson Housing Coalition, we want to keep you in the loop about all that we are doing over here. This quarterly publication will keep you up to date about DHC events, workshops, fundraisers, and service opportunities. Thank you for your support, and enjoy!

5 Ways to Make a Difference at DHC
1. Participate in a DHC fundraiser this fall. First up is our fourth annual Ride for Hope and Housing. Featuring a 5K fun ride, a 25K, 50K, and a 100K race, the Ride has options for everyone! For more information about registering or volunteering for the Ride, click here. Also coming up this fall is the sale of our 2009 "Images of Hometowns" calendar, featuring local photographers' images representative of Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, and Mooresville. Look for future publications or on our website for more information about the calendar.
2. Volunteer for HAMMERS. Zach, our Hammers coordinator, is always looking for volunteers to help out with weekend repair projects. Contact Zach for more information.
3. GoodSearch for DHC. With GoodSearch, every time you search the web, money is donated to DHC! Just go to www.goodsearch.com and under "Who do you GoodSearch for?" enter in Davidson Housing Coalition. You can even add GoodSearch to your internet toolbar. It's so easy, why wouldn't you do it!
4. Donate your used vehicle to V-DAC. At V-DAC, you can donate your old car, and V-DAC will sell it for you and donate the profits to your designated organization (DHC!). For more information, go to www.v-dac.com. 5. Write a good-ole fashioned check! Ya'll know how this works...

DHC and "Today's Economy": Workshops for the Community
The phrase, "in today's economy," while becoming cliched, has never been more relevant for DHC. "Today's economy" presents unique opportunities for our Homeownership and Financial Literacy Counselor, Robin Brown.
DHC has offered homeownership education classes for seven years now; last fall we began offering financial literacy workshops on everything from how to make your car last longer to stretching a dollar when every dime counts; this summer, we are bringing these financial literacy workshops to children. To middle-schoolers at the Davidson Freedom Schools, Robin teaches about everything from money-saving techniques to taxes.
Of course, for those of us who didn't have Robin to educate us about the ups and downs of surviving "today's economy," DHC still offers Homebuyer Education and Financial Literacy classes periodically throughout every month to anyone interested. Workshops cover topics such as budgeting, credit, retirement, savings accounts, and financial planning. To register for a workshop, contact Robin Brown.
Upcoming Workshops:
7/22: Homebuyer Edu
7/29: Homebuyer Edu
8/05: Financial Literacy
8/09: Homebuyer Edu
9/02: Financial Literacy
9/16: Homebuyer Edu
9/23: Homebuyer Edu
10/07: Financial Literacy
10/11: Homebuyer Edu

Our New Staff
June was an exciting month for us here at DHC; in one month, two new faces joined our team. Nancy Waldrop took the reigns from Ann Roper as the Mangement and Development Fellow. We will miss Ann, who is off to graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill, but are very excited to welcome Nancy! Nancy is from Houston, Texas, and graduated from Davidson College this May with a degree in history. Zach Jakob has officially joined our staff as the HAMMERS coordinator after spending three summers and countless hours volunteering for the program and working with former HAMMERS coordinator Julianna Leachman. "Little Zach," as Marcia calls him, is from Mocksville, North Carolina, and also graduated from Davidson this May with a degree in political science. Be sure to come by and say hello!

In 2003, HAMMERS was created to address a growing concern about the prevalence of substandard housing in our area. The goal of HAMMERS is to reduce the immediate threats to life, health, and safety in homes owned and occupied by lower wealth residents of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, and Mooresville. Projects include repairing steps, installing wheelchair ramps, repairing or replacing electricity or plumbing, even re-roofing. Five years later, the HAMMERS program still thrives, and we are constantly working on projects in the area.
Run primarlily by volunteer efforts, the HAMMERS program is always looking for eager volunteers. While volunteers experienced in carpentry, electricity, or plumbing are always valuable, HAMMERS appreciates volunteers with or without building experience (donations don't hurt either).
For more information about the program or about volunteer opportunities, contact our HAMMERS coordinator, Zach Jakob. |
