Welcome to the second e-newsletter of 2010.

We have had a busy few months and we are pleased to announce several new ventures in this newsletter, including the launch of a peer support group for young people who hear voices and the relaunch of our Child Psychotherapy Service.

In this edition you can also read about some of our fundraising activities. We are so grateful for the energy and commitment of our volunteer fundraising committee and we would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped out. New Support Group for Young People Who Hear Voices

Adolescent GirlWe have recently launched the first ever Voice Collective peer support group for young people (aged 12-18) who hear voices, see visions or have other unusual sensory experiences. This exciting new group, run in partnership with Mind in Camden, offers young people the chance to share their experiences with others who understand and to find creative ways of coping with them.

The group runs every Thursday from 4.45 - 5.45pm at the Anna Freud Centre. If you know someone that might benefit from the group, email Katharina Watt or call +44 (0)20 7443 2230 for more information or visit the Voice Collective website.
Child Psychotherapy Service: Relaunch

Family Group"This is where I come to play, to learn how to think and to become a good boy."
A six year old boy's comments about what his therapy meant
to him.

"Our son's therapy has changed our relationship with each other - we think more now about ourselves in relation to him."
Parents give feedback on the impact of therapy on the family.

The Child Psychotherapy Service at the Anna Freud Centre has been relaunched. Jenny Stoker, who runs the new service with colleagues Angela Joyce and Marie Zaphiriou Woods, talks about this new development at the Centre:

"We are particularly excited to have the opportunity to restore and develop a service based on Anna Freud's model of work which is renowned internationally for its excellence and which has been so influential to the children and families it has served, to the trainees it educated, and to the researchers and policy makers it influenced."

Boy and FatherThe Child Psychotherapy Service is now accepting referrals of school-age children under the age of thirteen direct from professionals, as well as from parents who have had an initial discussion through the Centre's telephone Parent Consultation Service. Jenny explains:

"Our aim is to focus mainly on children who have  experienced, or are currently experiencing, family break-up, whether through parental conflict, divorce and separation or through care proceedings. We plan to carry out research on the work we are doing and we will provide training courses to support professionals and parents."

If you would like to access help for you or for someone you know please telephone Katharina Watt on +44 (0)20 7443 2230 or to email Katharina click here.
Clive Climbs Kilimanjaro for the Anna Freud Centre

Clive on a training expedition.
Clive Kornitzer
We are delighted to let you know that Clive Kornitzer is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in October 2010 in aid of the Anna Freud Centre. Clive explained his motivations to us:
'After attending one of your fundraising lunches as a guest of Rohin Shah I was made aware of the charity and the great work that you do.  It was an obvious choice to combine my desire for personal challenge with a good cause, hence my commitment to climbing Kili and raising money for the Anna Freud Centre.'

Not only has Clive been training hard for the climb, but his fundraising has also been very impressive. As well as securing donations from friends and family Clive has managed to secure some corporate sponsorship in the form of energy bars from a company called Clif.CLIF Logo Clive says:
'Having initially set a target of £5,000 which has already been exceeded, like the climb I think I will aim high: as the mountain is over 19,000ft, I am setting my sights on £20,000.'

We would like to thank Clive for choosing the Anna Freud Centre as his charity and we wish him the best of luck with his training and the climb.

Anna Freud Centre Alumni
Male StudentThose who have trained or done a Masters course at the Anna Freud Centre often ask about how they can keep in touch with their peers once they have left. Several people have suggested that networking with other alumni could help them in their professional development.

In response to this, we are setting up an Alumni Association for all those who have graduated from a child psychotherapy training or a Masters course at the Anna Freud Centre. If you are a former student, we will soon be writing to you about this exciting new development and we hope you will become involved.  Meanwhile, if you have any ideas for the Alumni Association please email Saul Hillman or call him on +44 (0)20 7794 2313.

Baby
Baby
The first year of life is a crucial development period. When the early relationship between mother and baby is disrupted or difficult, it can have a serious impact on the child in later life. Our Parent-Infant Project (PIP) provides specialist help to parents and babies aged 0-12 months. PIP works with parents and babies at the Anna Freud Centre and in the community. To find out more about PIP email Sara Mitchell.

Brain

Brain Scan
With the help of science and technology, we are making advances on how emotional problems can be identified early and effectively treated. The Anna Freud Centre has a Developmental Neuroscience Unit. The brain-scanning technology in our lab can help us to see the world through a baby or child's eyes, and to measure the impact of their experiences on their brain and emotional development.
Kirsty Young Gives Fundraising the Desert Island Edge
Kirsty Young with Michael Samuel, the Centre's Chair of Trustees.
Kirsty Young and Michael Samuel
During May our fundraising volunteers ran two successful fundraising events. The first event took place at the Anna Freud Centre, while the second was held at the British Academy. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception and then listened to talks about the work of the Centre. We were lucky enough to have the TV and radio presenter Kirsty Young as chair of the British Academy event.

We would like to thank Kirsty Young and our volunteer Fundraising Committee who made these events such a success. To date we have raised around £70,000 - thank you to all those who have supported our annual appeal.
