Greetings!

Welcome to the third newsletter of 2009.

In this issue we bring you news about two projects; one reaching out to families in need and one working with vulnerable mothers and their babies. We hope you will enjoy reading about these new developments.

We do hope you can join us on Sunday 20th September for our annual Open Afternoon. It is not too late to donate a raffle prize or to volunteer to help on the day - please see below for more details.

We are so grateful to all our donors and supporters for continuing to make our work with children, young people and their families possible.

New Grant offers lifeline to families in distress

Mother and daugtherWhen children and young people experience emotional difficulties the whole family is affected. It is often difficult to access help; this increases the pressure on the individuals affected and on already strained family relationships. Easy-to-access services with short waiting times can be a lifeline for families.

The Anna Freud Centre's Family Support Service offers help to parents, families and children. A new grant from the John Lyon's Charity will enable this service to continue and develop over the next three years. Dr Nick Midgley explains the difference this will make to families desperately seeking help:

'The service offers help to families with school-age children, where there are worries about the child's behaviour or emotional well-being. We know that families often struggle to find the right help at the right time, so our consultations are easy to access, quickly provided and free.

The grant from the John Lyon's Charity will allow us to increase the number of families supported by the Service and to develop and evaluate this exciting new approach to working with children and young families.Father and daughter

Professionals from across the UK and around the world have already shown interest in the new ways of working that the Service is developing and we hope to make a real difference to the emotional well-being of families through conferences, trainings and publications.'

Toddlers at Sainsbury's
We are delighted to announce that the Anna Freud Centre has been chosen by our local Sainsbury's supermarket as their 'Charity of the Year'!  This means that we will be working in partnership with the store to raise money and awareness in the coming year through in-store collections and fun events.

Anna Freud Centre staff and volunteers will be at the store (02 Centre, Finchley Road) on two Fridays to promote our Open Afternoon. We will be at the store on 11th and 18th September from 11am to 1pm, so please come down and say hello if you are in the local area. 'New Beginnings'
in prison Mother Baby Units

Mother and baby
The Anna Freud Centre offers vital help to the most vulnerable children in society. Our New Beginnings programme reaches into prisons to help incarcerated mothers to develop a relationship with their baby. Establishing an early bond can protect these children from early trauma and create a foundation for a relationship after the mother's release from prison.

We are delighted that HM Prison Service has now commissioned the New Beginnings programme to be rolled out in four Mother Baby Units between 2009-2011.
