AFC News in Brief

Reaching out to pregnant teenagers and young parents

Pregnant teenagers and young parents often receive negative attention in the media, from their peers and society around them.  In many cases teenage parents lack the help they need and many are estranged from their own families.  Teenage mothers are more likely to suffer from postnatal depression, eating disorders, anxiety and are more likely to self harm or act in other ways that puts themselves and their babies at risk.

The Anna Freud Centre helps young parents by informing and training the professionals who work with them. The Anna Freud Centre is helping practitioners who work with teenage parents to engage effectively with this high-risk group through a new course, pioneered at the Centre with a Department of Health grant.

Participants on Teen CourseThe course of 8 study days of lectures and interactive workshops aims to increase practitioners' understanding of the psychological processes of adolescence, pregnancy and infancy, and ways in which these interrelate.  Course Leader Professor Joan Raphael-Leff and her team ran the first course in spring/summer 2008 and the second course is currently running again with participants including health visitors, social workers, psychologists and midwives.  The feedback from those taking part is very positive, as one participant explains:
'The course has had a direct impact on my work in so many different ways. I feel more qualified to look at things from so many different aspects and to give our young parents examples of why they feel the way they do and how normal these feelings are.'

2008 Annual Open Afternoon

Face painting at the AFC Open AfternoonThe sun shone on our annual Open Afternoon on Sunday 16th September 2008.  We were joined by children and families for a fun afternoon of free activities including make your own clock, lantern making, face painting, penalty shoot-out, rhyme time and baby massage.

Open Afternoon Rhyme Time
There was something for everyone with homemade cakes, a raffle and tombola, lucky dip and a mobile library.  Families also took the the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Centre - a short film about our work shown through the afternoon was well attended.

A photographer from the local newspaper 'The Ham and High' was there to capture the atmosphere for a feature in the newspaper.

Open Afternoon CarThanks to the Fundraising Committee and everyone who volunteered on the day or who donated a prize for the tombola/raffle.  If you are interested in volunteering time or making a donation for next year's event please contact the Open Afternoon team on 020 7794 2313.
