Greetings!
A few days before our charity golf event, the Senate Ways and Means Committeeannounced their recommended budget cuts for FY10. A staggering $5 million (46%) had been slashed from the Mass Legal Assistance Corp line item. If adopted, this meant MLAC's general support grants to local legal aid programs like ours would be 85% less than the last fiscal year.
Since then, the Senate passed an amendment restoring $2 million to the MLAC line item. This number still represents a 27% cut from FY09.
With our biggest fundraiser just days away, we were cautiously optimistic about its outcome, and all too aware that we had just lost several sponsors due to the economy. Fewer sponsors meant fewer golfers and a smaller bidding pool. Still, we held our breath - for good weather and a good outcome.
Thanks to your combined efforts- from sponsoring a foursome to donating and bidding on auction items to helping out the day of the event- we are pleased to report that we grossed nearly $50,000. And while we're at it, we'll credit you with bringing the good weather.
Comparison stats from MWLS golf tournaments:
Year # Sponsors # Golfers Gross
2009 17 @ $33,525 70 $47,474
2008 19 @ $43,380 109 $66,070
2007 15 @ $35,600 85 $53,233
2006 16 @ $36,200 82 $50,475
As always, your generosity of both time and money is much appreciated. Now, onto our next fundraiser!

Get Smart! |
If you joined us for cocktails, apres-golf, you no doubt witnessed our auctioneer, Jack Agnew, doing some creative wrangling at the podium. Before guests had a chance to slip away to dinner, Jack had sold our first ten Smart Car raffle tickets. Many thanks to Bob Lamprey, Larry Erickson, Chris Horblit, Mark Bean, Vince Peck, Brent McDonald, Mike Heineman and Chris Knollmeyer (3 tix!). The MWLS staff and your co-workers' grumbling stomachs were much appreciative.
The Smart Car will be showcased at various town events over the summer and fall. The winning ticket will be drawn on November 12, 2009 at the MWLS "Evening of Wine Tasting and Art", assuming a minimum number of tickets are sold. Tickets are $100 each, with a maximum of 750. So if you havent' already made your purchase, Get Smart! and do it now! You can find more information about the Smart Car raffle on our website. Thanks to Herb Chambers for assisting with this new venture. |

Golf Tournament Raises Nearly $50K |
Unseasonably cold weather did not deter 71 golfers from enjoying the 2009 Nancy King Memorial Golf Tournament on May 18.
Changes to this year's event included an Express Lunch and dinner stations, to allow more time for golf and mingling. A client slideshow
preceeded the live auction, held in the Grill Room during the cocktail hour.
Bargains could be had on everything from a week's vacation at Sugarbush which sold for $1750, to a South Beach Miami week that went for $1000. Red Sox tickets dominated the bidding with almost $1000 raised from several sets. Other popular items included a SkyWalk SkyCaddie that sold for $220, a Cambridge SoundWorks iPod docking system for $250, and a Magellan GPS for $275. The live and silent auctions and the raffle raised nearly $10,000. Mulligan sales and 50/50 contests brought the total to $47,474. We are extremely grateful to all bidders and donors! Check our website for a list of gift and prize donations.
First place awards in the Scramble went to the Casual Male Retail Group team of Robert Molloy, Mark Bean, Jim Metscher and Wally Sprague. Best Ball first place winner was Holland & Knight's Ralph Lepore and teammates Steven Miller, John O'Neill and Howard Gaynor.
Congratulations to all of this year's winners! Scroll down to see a complete list.
