Children's Development Is Workforce Development

The Society for Human Resource Management and the Partnership for America's Economic Success published a new brochure, Meeting the Workforce Needs of the Future Means Meeting the Developmental Needs of Young Children Today. This brochure includes data which suggests that the current labor force does not meet today's business needs, and it provides evidence that investment in early childhood education is the best way to improve our nation's workforce and economy.

Speakers at the Sullivan & Co. Economic Outlook Breakfast
Economic Outlook Breakfast 2010
A recent Economic Outlook Breakfast held in Rhode Island in June had a similar message. One of Rhode Island's biggest workforce development challenges is a low rate of students obtaining a college degree. Ray M. Di Pasquale, Acting Commissioner of Higher Education and President of the Community College of Rhode Island, said that four out of five Rhode Island students who start high school do not obtain a college degree. But, the majority of new jobs in the next decade will require an advanced education.

Research Roundup: Monolingualism, Testing Curriculum

The Effects of Monolingualism
The July 19 issue of Exchange Everyday touched on issues faced by multilingual children in monolingual child care centers. The author of a recent article on the topic found that these children "start to feel insecure and cannot actively participate in the learning processes. They have little opportunity to display their acquired linguistic skills or to develop them further. Many ask themselves at an early stage whether they are allowed to use both languages and whether they have to opt for only one. They experience not only devaluation of their family language(s) but also of their identity". Click here to access the full Exchange Everyday article.

New Review of Curriculum Effectiveness
A new report (60 pages) from Johns Hopkins University evaluates the effectiveness of preschool curricula. Of the 28 programs included, 11 receive favorable ratings, with six showing strong evidence of effectiveness and five showing moderate evidence of effectiveness.

The report finds that "comprehensive programs focused broadly on cognitive development rather than solely academic skills had better long-term effects on social adjustment outcomes such as reductions in delinquency, welfare dependency, and teenage pregnancy, and increases in educational and employment levels".

The six showing "strong evidence of effectiveness" are: Curiosity Corner, Direct Instruction, ELLM, Interactive Book Reading, Let's Begin with the Letter People, and Ready Set Leap! The five programs with "moderate evidence of effectiveness" are: Breakthrough to Literacy, Bright Beginnings, Building Blocks plus DLM, Building Blocks DLM Express plus Open Court, and Project Approach.
