Resources for Families: Tax Time, Resources in Spanish

In a time of instability and incredible economic pressures, tax credits can help eligible families make ends meet. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) provides federal and state tax credits, worth up to thousands of dollars.

Families need to claim these tax credits when they file their 2009 tax returns. Most families will be receiving the tax documents they need to file their taxes in the next few weeks, making this an especially critical time for tax credits outreach.

Spread the word out to families about tax credits. The national Women's Law Center offers free information and outreach materials on their website: www.nwlc.org/loweryourtaxes

Get Ready to Read!, an initiative of the National Center for Learning Disabilities, recently launched a new section on its website that provides resources to assist Spanish-speaking parents in helping their children build early literacy and learning skills before kindergarten. It also offers practical tips to help parents communicate with educators and day care providers about their child's developmental progress. Visit their website to learn more and access the materials.

Research Roundup: Brain Architecture, Child Hunger

The Center for the Developing Child at Harvard University recently added a new interactive feature to their website that explains core concepts in the science of early childhood development through images and text. It discusses how brains are built over time, the interactions of genes and experience, the damage caused by "toxic stress", and why early intervention matters. The new feature is available here

Food insecurity--where young children do not have enough food at home--can be addressed if you know how to spot the symptoms. An article in the current issue of Healthy Childcare looks at this growing concern. In this economy, more and more young children in child care are from households where there isn't enough food and the children are hungry. In 2007, almost 16 percent of households with children were food insecure at some time in the previous year. 2010-2011 National Head Start Fellowship Applications Now Being Accepted
