Ready to Learn and Imagine Preschool Join BrightStars, Prepare for Pre-K Demonstration Project

Ready to Learn Providence at CCRI and Imagine Preschool are the two newest BrightStars member programs.

The R2LP program, located at the CCRI Liston Campus in Providence, opened in October 2008. Earlier this month, the program was chosen as one of the state's seven Pre-K Demonstration Project sites.

r2lpdes"For Ready to Learn, the process of completing the BrightStars application was cathartic in nature. It helped us focus on the quality of the work we do and think about how to improve our program. It has provided us with first-hand experience with the BrightStars application process so that we can be more effective in supporting our many partners, child care centers, and family child care providers, so that they too can benefit from the process of self assessment and reflection", said Leslie Gell, R2LP Director, and Christine Chiacu-Forsythe, Program Director.

Visit R2LP's website to read more about their BrightStars experience.

imaginelogoImagine Preschool of The Providence Center is also part of the Pre-K pilot that begins next month. Imagine Preschool is located at the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

Both programs achieved a rating of 4 Stars.

To learn more about BrightStars, join us for an info session on Tuesday, September 22 at 5pm. Please register by phone or email.

Research Roundup: Infant Mental Health, Child Behavior

The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Learning (CSEFEL) recently published a research synthesis, entitled Infant Mental Health and Early Care and Education Providers to answer frequently asked questions that early childhood providers have about infant mental health, early social and emotional development, and the infant mental health system. The report (14 pages) can be accessed here.

Promoting Social Behavior of Young Children in Group Settings: A Summary of Research provides a summary of intervention practices that are supported by empirical evidence for promoting adaptive social-emotional behavior of young children in group contexts. The focus of the synthesis is on toddlers and preschool children who are identified as having disabilities or who are at risk for disabilities, and who have identified problems with social-emotional behaviors. The practices described include those that are explicitly designed to increase the frequency or improve the quality of prosocial interactions, as well as those intended to improve emotional responding and reduce inappropriate and challenging behaviors. Quick Tip of the Month: H1N1 and Flu Preparedness

NAEYC has been working closely with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as the CDC has been considering the implications of the flu pandemic for field of early childhood education. With the ongoing outbreak of the swine influenza, the Center for Disease Control has requested that NAEYC inform our community of the following precautions to prevent the potential spread of swine influenza.

washhandsThe CDC has identified cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection in people all over the country. As of Aug. 1, 2009, a total of 6,506 hospitalizations and 436 deaths associated the swine flu viruses have been reported to CDC. The CDC is working with local and state health agencies to investigate these cases.

Child care and preschool programs can help protect the health of their staff and the children and families they serve by using this guide.

The CDC also published guidance on protecting students, teachers, and other staff in the K-12 setting.

Additionally, the EPA announced that more than 500 antimicrobial products can be used to combat influenza A virus. These antimicrobial products are registered by EPA to disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces that may be contaminated with the 2009-H1N1 flu (swine flu).
A public service announcement is also available to provide information and guidance for recent fraudulent activity surrounding ads for flu remedies. Visit public service announcement.
