What's New This Week?

 

Get Out Your Reading Glasses  

NICHES Land Trust needs a proofreader for: 

  • two newsletters a year
  • media print projects throughout the year
  • meeting minutes (approximately 6 per year)

Join us at the Fair 

Matrix Pregnancy Resource Center needs volunteers at a booth at the Tippecanoe County 4-H fair July 21-26th.  

  • 2 hour time slots
  • pass out brochures
  • inform people about Matrix.

Be a Friend of the Zoo 

Columbian Park Zoo - Annual Zoo Run Run 5k on July 21st  

  • pass out tee-shirts
  • man water stations and trail
  • clean-up
  • help with breakfast
  • volunteer anytime from 7:15 to 10:30am

Summer and Beyond  
Registered volunteers needed at the Indiana Veterans' Home. If you are 18+ years of age and would like to serve a minimum of 25 hours over the summer and beyond, weekday and/or weekends to:
  • maintain and water flower beds
  • help with summer recreational activities & cookouts
  • wheelchair transporters
  • resident companions
  • computer lab instructors
  • assist in the office

If your child is between the ages of 11 - 18 they can sign up to do volunteer work with selected agencies here in our community.

Fun Ways to Volunteer Summer Style!

Summer vacation is here, that means it is time to volunteer! Whether you are an individual wanting to volunteer, or a family, summer is the perfect time to introduce community service into your life. Why? Summer means great weather, better moods, and less hectic schedules. It is a great time to be outside being proactive in your community or inside enjoying the air conditioner and helping your neighbors.

 

Not sure how to get involved? Below is a huge list of ideas to get your summer break started in the social good direction!

  1. Summer reading anyone? Sign up to read a book to children at your local library.
  2. Volunteer at a summer camp as a counselor.
  3. Sign your kid up for Grab the Torch Summer Leadership Camp.
  4. Plant a community garden.
  5. Be a lifeguard at your neighborhood pool.
  6. Sell cold lemonade to your neighbors for free
  7. Bring water to your local dog park on a hot day.
  8. Prepare a meal for the families at Salvation Army Shelter .
  9. Mentor a child through program such as the Big Brothers Big Sisters 
  10. Build a house with Habitat for Humanity 
  11. Check with your Almost Home Humane Society to see if they need dog walkers
  12. Get your child to clean out their room and donate old toys to a children's shelter or Good Will.
  13. Give blood to the Red Cross
  14. Help clean up a river in your community.
  15. Help an adult learn how to read at Lafayette Adult Resource Academy.
  16. Put a quarter in a jar everyday of the summer and donate your collection to your favorite charity!
  17. Volunteer to clean up an older neighbor's yard.
  18. Make dinner for a family in need.
  19. Volunteer at a local museum like the Linden Depot Museum.
  20. Volunteer at the Columbian Park Zoo.
  21. Clean up a nature trail with NICHES Land Trust.
  22. Plant a tree or a vegetable garden.
  23. Start a neighborhood watch program to improve public safety.
  24. Hold a garage sale and donate your proceeds to a local charity
  25. Start recycling
  26. Hold a fundraising barbecue for your favorite charity.
  27. Adopt a shelter cat or dog at Almost Home Humane Society
  28. Make cards for soldiers over seas
  29. Visit a senior in a retirement home like Bickford Cottage.
  30. Teach a class at your local community center.
  31. Teach older adults how to use a computer.
  32. Volunteer at your local Fourth of July celebration
  33. Plant flowers at military cemetery.
  34. Volunteer to drive a senior citizen around
  35. Clean up your local park
  36. Volunteer your services at a nonprofit organization
  37. Organize a dog and cat food drive for Almost Home Humane Society
  38. Volunteer at a summer festival
  39. Nominate a volunteer for an award contest.
  40. Register for the National Conference on Volunteering and Service.
  41. Help coach a youth sports team.
  42. Volunteer at a local fair.
  43. Collect cans and donate them to Food Finders Food Bank 
  44. Teach English at Lafayette Adult Resource Academy
