VOLUNTEER
Week of Caring at The ARC
The Week of Caring Photo Contest winners are in!  To highlight the hard work of the 25 businesses who completed 84 projects as part of Week of Caring, United Way sponsored a photo contest.  At each campaign report meeting this October, United Way announced one of the four contest category winners. The above picture shows Wabash National, winners of the "Best Volunteer with Client Interaction", at The Arc's Kids Night Out.  Radian Research
claimed the "Best Use of Tools" caption for their creative use of spoons at the
YWCA ice cream social. Voters named Evonik the champion of "Most Fun Getting Dirty" for their photo at Tippecanoe County Child Care.  Fairfield grabbed the "Best Action Picture" for their work at Caregiver Companion.  In addition to their coveted best action photo award, Fairfield also received a grateful letter from a Caregiver Companion resident.  "The improvement of my yard still brings smiles to my face whenever I am outside.  I will bless you the rest of the year.  I shared the pictures with my adult children who live on both the East and West Coasts and they were both amazed and grateful."  Photo contest winners received gift certificates from United Way to enjoy at local restaurants and the heart-felt appreciation of 17 nonprofits and their clients.  Thank-you to all of the 2011 Week of Caring participants, and remember to enter the Week of Caring Photo Contest next year to showcase your team's success.  To view the other winning photos, click here.  For both individual and group on-going volunteer opportunities, contact United Way's Volunteer Associate Amy Wood at 765-742-9077 ext. 222.
EDUCATION
October e-news education

As a Read to Succeed partner, United Way of Greater Lafayette is spearheading Read to Succeed's application process for the All-America City Award!  Greater Lafayette will be competing with over 150 cities and counties for this high honor.  The National Civic League annually presents the All-America City Award to communities recognized for outstanding civic achievement.  Finalists are chosen based on their ability to demonstrate innovation, inclusiveness, and collaboration among community leaders to improve childhood literacy.  Read to Succeed's mission is to motivate our community to engage in our students' academic success.  With nearly 250 Read to Succeed volunteers donating their time each week at local schools, we feel the Greater Lafayette Community will be a formidable competitor for the All-America City Award.

INCOME

Bank On Tippecanoe Logo jpg

Did you know that the average unbanked person spends 5% of their net income on check-cashing services and fees? That adds up to about $1,000 per year, or $40,000 over an average working life! United Way of Greater Lafayette works with the City of Lafayette, Homestead Consulting Services, and participating banks and credit unions to help unbanked families improve their financial well-being through Bank On Tippecanoe. Bank on Tippecanoe works with clients to set up checking and savings accounts so they can start paying off debt, improve their credit, and begin saving for the future. All Bank On Tippecanoe participants must complete free money management training classes that provide them with the skills to manage their new checking account and navigate finances.  To learn more about Bank On Tippecanoe visit their website or contact United Way's Income Associate Jennifer Million at 765-742-9077 ext. 227.

HEALTH
  Mental Health America logo

Retailers begin stocking shelves with Christmas merchandise, reminding us all that the holiday season will be here before we know it.  Although the holidays bring great cheer to many, it can be a particularly depressing time of year for those who find themselves financially destitute.  One simple way that you can help those less fortunate this season is by getting involved with
Mental Health America's Holiday Gift Lift.  Mental Health America of Tippecanoe, a United Way Participating Organization, collects essential items, such as clothes, and distributes them to needy adults during the holiday season.  Each year, Mental Health America brightens the holidays for approximately 400 people through their Gift Lift program.  Recipients include clients of Mental Health America's Day Shelter and Supportive Housing apartments, as well as needy nursing home patients.  For more information on how you can help Mental Health America meet their goal of providing for physical needs while lifting spirits, visit their website or contact their office at 765-742-1800.

Join us and Live United! Help us spread the word. Imagine how many people we can reach if you forward this to five people.
