Where are we on the Civic Health Index?

Civic health is a measure of how actively citizens engage in their communities.

The Indiana Civic Health Index measures how actively Hoosiers engage in their communities. The inaugural report offers both good news and bad news about Indiana's civic health.

Hoosiers are about average in volunteering, with about 26% of Hoosiers donating their time and talents to organizations.

Hoosiers are slightlybetter than average in:

  • community involvement, in the form of belonging to religious, neighborhood, school, sports or other types of community groups--where more than one-third of Hoosiers belong. To illustrate, 9% of Hoosiers take a leadership role by serving as an officer or on a committee. Indiana ranked 21st among states in this area.
  • family dinners, where 90% of Hoosiers report eating dinner with their families a few times a week or more. Indiana ranked 17th.

Hoosiers are worse than average in:

  • voter registration, with only 61% of eligible Hoosiers registered to vote. Indiana ranks 43rd.
  • voter turnout, with only 39% of Hoosiers exercising their right to vote. Indiana ranks 48th in voter turnout.
  • working with neighbors to solve community problems. Indiana ranked 45th.
  • discussing politics frequently. Indiana ranks 48th.

The report illustrates how Indiana compares on efforts that promote civic health. Keep up the good work in community involvement within Greater Lafayette by continuing to work together volunteering. Contact United Way Volunteer Center today for your next adventure!
