Creating the Happy Habit

By: Matez Hito

Start your 2012 with a new healthy habit on life happiness!!

Many individuals feel a pressure to develop happiness in life. However, many individuals feel that true happiness is just beyond their grasp and always a simple goal away.  Seeking goals, milestones, or accomplishments is a chase to happiness, not a solution to life success.  Many experts believe that happiness is an attitude change, rather then a defined objective.

According to Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of The How of Happiness states that happy people tend to pay attention to the things they can control and do not worry about the rest.  Dr. Lyubomirsky suggests the following 12 tips for a happier life:

  1. Count your blessings.  be aware of all the good things in your life and express gratitude for what you have.
  2. Cultivate optimism.  Make an effort to see the upside of a situation and surround yourself with positive people.
  3. Avoid social comparison.  This is a tough one in our aspirational culture, but it is well worth cutting down on how ofter you dwell on your problems and compare yourself to others.
  4. Practice random acts of kindness towards friends and strangers.
  5. Nurture your relationships.  Do not take your friends and family for granted.
  6. Do more activities that really engage you.  Increase what psychologists call the "flow" state where you're totally absorbed in what you are doing.
  7. Savor life's joys.  Go over them either by writing them down or thinking and talking about them.
  8. Commit to your goals.  Pick at least one significant goal and devote time and effort to pursuing it.
  9. Develop coping strategies.  Practice ways to get through or get over stress or trauma.
  10. Learn to forgive.  Letting go of old hurts and resentments frees your mind and heart.
  11. Practice religion or spirituality.  Research shows people who do so are happier.
  12. Take care of your body.  Exercise, meditation, and laughing all count.

Coach Traub's - On Setting Goals
coach traubb 2

Coach Traub's mission is to over-deliver value on goods and services designed to help you "win" the mental side of the game.

Keep it simple:

"You have very little control over what goes on around you,

but total control over how you choose to respond to it."

At the begging of the year, many individuals set personal new year resolutions.  Resolutions are no more then goals that individuals strive to accomplish during the year.

On goals, Couch Traub asks:

"So you have goals... do they help you?"

We all have goals, whether we realize it or not.  Some simply act to avoid pain.  Others move towards pleasure.  A select few systematically set and use their goals to navigate themselves towards exactly what they wan tin life.  Well-stated, monitored, adjusted goals will help direct attention appropriately, provoke physical action on this focus, improve time management skills, and increase persistence.  These goals directed behaviors are not always normal, so if where you're headed isn't normal or average either, actually writing down well-formed goals will help you achieve the extraordinary.

Short-term (under a year) goals should have six characteristics. They should be SMART and controllable. That is, they should be [S]pecific, [M]easureable, [A]ttractive, [R]ealistic, [T]imed, and Controllable. It will not, in and of itself, help to say that I want to be great. One needs to define greatness specifically, in controllable and measurable terms. Then an individual must choose a level that is both attractive and realistic, and a date by which the goal will be reached.

Literature Review - Firewalkers
Biancardi Cover

Reviewed by: J. L. Biancardi

A story you might find interesting and fun to read is the short story, Firewalkers, by Joseph Biancardi. It is being offered for free, online at Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, Sony, Kobo, Apple and Diesel.com.

The author worked with former students and used some of the material from Tolly Burkan's sessions. While it is a work of fiction, it demonstrates what an individual that believes in the power of intention could accomplish.

The story takes place in the Mammoth Mountain area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the Long Valley Caldera.; a ring of dormant volcanoes predicted to be the most likely occurrence of the next major volcano in North America.

The story begins with Nick Rice, a decorated US Marine, having nightmares of his children appearing to be running through a forest fire. Requesting an emergency leave, he rushes home and takes them to a weekend session with Tolly Burkan. There, his family learns what the body can endure using techniques demonstrated by Tolly.

Returning home, they find that frequent tremors in their mountain are intensifying. Within hours they are trapped on their mountain that erupts shooting flames into the air and pouring lava behind the family as they race by foot down the fiery inferno.

The story is an action packed adventure, sure to keep you on the edge of your seat and a smile on your face. It's an enjoyable read and for the price, I highly recommend it.
