Helping you to make Norfolk a better place

May News 2011

In tough economic times it's nice to be able to welcome good news and you'll see below that we have plenty to share with you.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer's budget announcement of an inheritance tax discount for those leaving charitable legacies means that leaving money to local good causes through legacies is now more effective than ever. With more and more people leaving gifts to say thank you to their local communities the value of many legacies is now likely to be significantly increased.

Various forms of legacy can be left and Norfolk Community Foundation has an online guide at www.norfolkfoundation.com/legacies.  Of course, we always recommend potential donors seek professional advice before writing or amending their will but for those who haven't done it yet it may be worth taking a look.   Alternatively if you'd like to discuss this in person please just pick up the phone and we'll be happy to tell you more.

Yours sincerely

Localgiving.com launches in Norfolk

The Foundation has joined forces with Localgiving.com to make giving even easier in Norfolk. Localgiving.com is the first UK website where members of the public can easily find and support trusted local charities working across a range of causes and donate instantly.

The website aims to help local charities and community groups, including those too small to be registered with the Charity Commission, become more sustainable by making new income streams easily accessible. It provides them with access to online fundraising and marketing tools only previously available to large national charities.

Marcelle Speller, founder of Localgiving.com who also appeared on C4's Secret Millionaire last year said: "Localgiving.com is delighted to partner with Norfolk Community Foundation, a charity that has historically paved the way for local philanthropy in Nofolk."

To browse the full list of organizations registered in Norfolk, to find out more about them or to make a donation visit www.localgiving.com  The Foundation is also planning a series of events for those representing groups who might benefit from registering - to find out more contact janejones@nofolkfoundation.com or call us on 01603 623958.

29th & 30th June - We are giving £5,000 to community groups!

As the Charity of the Year chosen by the President of The Royal Norfolk Show for 2011 we will be enjoying our first year at the show.  For this our thanks go to Richard Jewson JP, who is also HM Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk and a Joint Patron of the Norfolk Community Foundation.

Our focus for the show is the Norfolk 100 and we are creating a really exciting opportunity for community groups and charities.

We are recruiting new N100 members during the show willing to commit £1000 for three years to support Norfolk charities and community groups. £500 of each year's donation is used immediately for grant giving and the other £500 is invested in an endowment to ensure the N100 provides grant giving long into the future.

This means that we will be raising money to be given relatively quickly to groups in need and the new N100 members will be able to see their money making a difference almost immediately. If you have a community group or project which needs funding all you need to do is pop in (or ask someone to do this on your behalf) to our stand and register your interest on a very simple contact sheet. Our grants team will then contact you to find out more and assess applications. Five community groups will be awarded £1000 each as a result of popping in to see us at the show.

We'll be on stand 33 in the countryside area where we also aim to have a refreshing glass of fizz or beer waiting courtesy of Adnams breweries for those supporting the Foundation or interested in finding out more about our work.

A new way businesses can support the Foundation and save money!

The Norfolk Community Foundation is leading the way in the UK as the first community foundation to benefit from a new chip and pin service, and businesses nominating the Foundation as the charity they would like to support could also significantly benefit.

Ethecol is the first merchant service provider in the UK set up as a social enterprise, providing competitive chip and pin services to businesses which can also raise money for charity. In addition to the businesses which get a better deal when switching accounts to Ethecol, the Foundation gets commission on the introduction when the account is opened. Part of the commission usually earned by the banks on each member's transactional turnover also goes to our newly created Ethecol Fund instead.

The first Norfolk businesses have already signed up:  Norwich Christian Resource Centre & Forget Me Not Café and Helen Smith from Maximum Wellness.  NCRC centre manager Steven Foyster said: "I was surprised by this; it's a real win win situation for everybody.  We should save around £1100 per year on our merchant service costs. That's obviously a significant amount of money to any business, and it's great to be able to raise funds for the Foundation too."

The first Ethecol terminal to benefit the Foundation is delivered in Norfolk

If 200 businesses supporting the Foundation sign up, Norfolk charities benefit by as much as £50,000 per year. Ethecol is the brainchild of merchant service specialist Peter King and social entrepreneur Robert Ashton, who is also a Foundation trustee. He adds:"It costs nothing for a business to find out what the savings might be and collectively this could give a massive financial boost to the Foundation."

To find out more about Ethecol visit www.ethecol.com, email ethecol@barefootpr.org or call 01953 605000.

And finally 2011
If you've found this interesting, please pass it on and help us help Norfolk even more. If you have any queries about the Foundation or would simply like to find out more please visit the website here, email us at info@norfolkfoundation.com or just give us a call on 01603 623958.
