| Welcome |
Welcome to the December edition of the Norfolk Community Foundation E-Zine.
I am pleased to say that the Foundation has had a very busy three months.
We held a successful launch of our "Love Norfolk" campaign at the John Innes Centre and I have been delighted with the support that individuals, local businesses and organisations have shown to our work. (See below for a report)
Two new funds have had high profile launches this quarter. The first, in October, was the Bernard Matthews Fund followed more recently by the May Gurney Foundation Fund which will also support charities and community based groups in Sussex and Devon. We are very pleased to be partnering with these two organisations, which highlight the importance of business in supporting charitable causes across Norfolk.
2010 will undoubtedly continue to present some unique challenges for the Foundation as we seek to build our grant giving capabilities through the generosity of our donors.
Although there are the obvious signs of growth the economic climate continues to impact on our fundraising activities at a time when the demand from charities and community groups for financial support through our grants continues to rise. I am, however, hopeful that in 2010 we will be able to meet those challenges.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our donors and supporters for their continuing support in 2009 and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

| NCF teams up with Comic Relief |
In the last E-Zine the Foundation were pleased to announce that it had recently been appointed by Comic Relief as its grant giving partner for Norfolk for the next two years. We also reported that we had been successful in a competitive tender against six other Foundations across the East of England to secure a further £30,000 of Comic Relief funding to support a single significant project over two years outside of the Norwich area.
The Foundation will therefore be working with YESU who were in turn successful in the tender process managed by the Foundation Grants Team.
YESU runs a coffee bar/lounge and advice centre in Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast, which offers advice on drug awareness, debt help, homelessness, employment, pregnancy advice, mental health, disability issues and on benefits. It also helps people with parenting, vocational and life and social skills courses.
Richard Allen, project director, said: "We are thrilled to have received this funding from Comic Relief as it will enable us to employ a community worker who will develop the skills of our volunteers in building relationships with vulnerable people and co ordinate their care packages."

Norfolk Sports and Cultural Foundation backs more Rising Stars in 2009
|
|

In partnership with Norfolk County Council the Norfolk Community Foundation administers Norfolk Sports and Cultural Foundation. Increased funding has almost doubled the number of Norfolk's young sporting and cultural elite awarded grants through the Foundation this year.
Founded in 2008 by Norfolk County Council with an annual investment of £35,000 the Norfolk Sports and Cultural Foundation offers 2 funding strands, 'Rising Stars' and 'Make It Happen', for talented individuals in Norfolk aged 14 upwards.
This year the fund has been able to distribute grants totalling £57,000 with support from the Norse Group and the John Jarrold Trust.
This boost has meant that 23 talented young people have been awarded grants this year, rising from just 14 in 2008.
With grants ranging from £1,000 per year to £5,000, the sporting and cultural stars will be helped to train, learn, be better equipped and better supported in their area of expertise in the run up to 2012. |
| Love Norfolk Event |
More than 280 people came to the John Innes Centre on Tuesday 27th October to learn more about the Foundation's work as we launched our new campaign, called simply 'Love Norfolk'.
This event was an opportunity to share with a diverse audience of individuals, businesses and organisations the Foundation's progress since its creation in 2005 and to set the scene for a campaign that will provide a new and refreshing impetus to our work, particularly after the end of the Grassroots match funding challenge in March 2011.
By harnessing people's undeniable love of Norfolk we hope to encourage new donors to the Foundation's work and allow us to connect them, through their generosity, with those individuals and organisations whose charitable work is such an important aspect of Norfolk life.
The work of the Foundation is an important one and we hope that the Love Norfolk campaign will allow us to increase the support we are able to offer, through our donors, to the small charities and community based groups across Norfolk. The simple statistics below highlight the impact the Foundation has made and continues to make across Norfolk. See EDP article on our website:

Since its creation the Norfolk Community Foundation has given out grants totalling £1,375,000 to help 594 small charities and community based groups. In 2008 alone grants of £611,000 helped 240 charities and organisations across the county.
Here are five ways you can show your Love for Norfolk:

| Grassroots - campaign update |
I am pleased to report that the Foundation's efforts to achieve its government grassroots target have been recognised by the Office of the Third Sector (OTS) and the Community Development Foundation who administer the scheme on behalf of the government.
You may recall that we were originally challenged to raise £1,600,000 by 31st March 2011 to secure an additional sum of £800,000 from the OTS to support charities and community groups working tirelessly across Norfolk.
A government review at the 18 month point found that not all local funders were meeting their annual targets which prompted a re-allocation of funds to ensure that the government funding was fully utilised before the end of the programme.
As a result of that review the Norfolk Community Foundation has been allocated an additional amount of match funding totalling £298,000 which means we now have to raise over the three years a sum of £2,197,000 to secure our new match funding allocation of £1,098,000.
This is excellent news for Norfolk and the challenge now rests with the Foundation and the people of Norfolk to ensure we embrace the opportunity. Please let us know if you would like a personal visit to explain the challenge in more detail.
About Grassroots
Through this scheme, administered by Norfolk Community Foundation, all new donations however big or small will be doubled by the Treasury through matching of £1 for every £2 donated, and where eligible the gift aid can be matched too; companies and higher rate tax payers can then reclaim a minimum of 20% of their donation back through their tax return.
Also through this challenge a higher rate tax payer can establish a £25,000 named fund to support the issues and communities in Norfolk you care about most, for just £9,750.
To see how this works in detail take a look at the "endowment challenge overview" under Grassroots on our website

Norfolk Community Foundation would like to thank its partners in the Grassroots programme, Voluntary Norfolk, Norfolk Rural Community Council and West Norfolk Voluntary and Community Action for their support in the delivery of this programme. |
| Norfolk 100 plus |
Back on 5th October 2007 the Foundation formally launched the Norfolk 100 with a reception at the Great Hospital Hall and I am pleased to say that at our third anniversary 130 members had joined the Foundation to support small charities and community organisations across Norfolk through the N100.
In addition to our revenue funds, which are distributed quarterly, the N100 has also created an endowment totalling £120,000 which will continue to grow and ensure that the interest is available for grant giving for years to come.
There is no doubt that the Norfolk 100 has been a huge success and many community organisations have benefited from the collective donations of like-minded people. However, with the passing of the three year anniversary the need to continue to support the N100 is key as it is such a unique offering for our members and the community alike
Who are the Norfolk 100? See our website for a full list. |
