Think your publisher is 'quartering' your royalties? Get a free audit
There has been much discussion on the TAA Textbook Authoring Listserv with regard to something calling "quartering," which is described as the publisher selling the rights to translate the author's work to an affiliate or subsidiary, then collecting 50% of the receipts from that license. Since the stated royalty rate is usually half the "regular" rate, getting 50% of half supposedly yields "quartering".
To satisfy the concerns of those members who feel they have been disadvantaged by their publisher, Rosenzweig has offered to undertake a preliminary royalty review for any TAA member, at no cost to an author who believes he or she has been subjected to "quartering".

TAA member John (Jack) Ivancevich dies

John (Jack) Michael Ivancevich died Monday, October 26, 2009. Ivancevich, a long-time TAA member, was a professor at the University of Houston (UH) for 35 years, where he was selected for the Hugh Roy and Lilly Cranz Cullen Chair of Organizational Behavior and Management in 1979. He authored 88 books, including Organizational Behavior and Management; Business: Principles, Guidelines, and Practices, Business for the 21st Century; and Foundations of Personnel: Human Resource Management. The 11th edition of his Organizations: Behavior, Structure, Processes, won a TAA McGuffey Longevity Award in 2005.
"TAA is saddened to learn of his passing," said Richard T. Hull, Ph.D., TAA's executive director. "He was an exemplar of the fine and honorable tradition of textbook authoring for us all. TAA joins Jack's friends and family in their grief at his death. His works will remain in TAA's pantheon of excellence."

ACTION ISSUE TAA members asked to make opinions on govt-published 'free' textbooks known
TAA Executive Director Richard Hull asks members to help the Association of American Publishers with their efforts to amend a bill (HR 3221) that would allow the government to produce online course materials. The AAP argues that quality online materials are already readily available, and the government would be hurting authors, publishers, and the hundreds of companies involved in developing and distributing online materials - and students - by competing with them.

Book Review: The Black Academic's Guide to Winning Tenure-Without Losing Your Soul

Reviewed by Dr. Tiffany Howard
The Black Academic's Guide to Winning Tenure-Without Losing Your Soul presents a realistic portrayal of the many challenges facing African American junior faculty at universities across the country.
The authors provide critical insight into the experience of the black assistant professor by acknowledging the racial politics that emerge in academia, and how departmental politics are often tied to race and ethnicity. Instead of avoiding the difficult topics and issues, Kerry Ann Rockquemore and Tracey Laszloffy discuss how black assistant professors, in their quest for tenure, sometimes experience isolation, double standards in the classroom, hostility, the excessive burden of mentorship, alienation and exclusion from networks. The authors also point out how multiculturalism and diversity programs are not always the answer and that in some cases have led to color blindness, where university administration has thus ignored the complexities of race that remain salient in spite of these initiatives.

How a copy editor can help you polish your work
by Laura Poole
As a professional freelance copy editor, I have the pleasure and honor of working with publishers and authors of scholarly titles. I have known authors who resisted copy editing (or any kind of editing), and publishers who won't pay for a thorough edit of a manuscript. Sadly, these occurrences generally result in inferior work being published.
You may wonder why you should work with an editor at any stage of your writing. Working with an editor that you hire can help prepare your book for a publisher by making it clearer, effective, and easier to read. Most reputable publishing houses will have copyediting done as part of the process of publishing to clean up your text and make sure it conforms to the publisher's style.
