New TAA Conference session: 'Author & Publisher Open Discussion: Ask Your Questions About Publishing & Marketing Issues'
Current and prospective authors will have an opportunity to ask questions of a book publisher and a marketing coordinator during this open Q&A discussion. Mary Ellen Lepionka is the owner of Atlantic Path Publishing, and can answer questions related to the acquisition, editing and publishing process, as well as how traditional publishers are adapting to pricing issues and the used book market, the digitization movement, the online marketplace, and the open access movement. She will explore with us several strategies for keeping our textbooks "alive," including such alternative publishing models as e-textbooks, online courses, wiki-textbooks, and academic self-publishing. Lauren Betsos is marketing coordinator for Cengage Learning (Engineering). She can answer questions about issues related to eMarketing and the international marketplace for academic texts, as well as questions surrounding eCommerce, the move from print to digital content, electronic supplements or ancillary production, and making a text marketable outside the US.

Greetings!
We will be taking a two-month hiatus from sending your print member newsletter, The Academic Author, but in the meantime, we will continue to keep you up-to-date with bi-monthly TAA News Alerts.
We have split the TAA Listserv up into the Textbook Authoring Listserv and the Academic Authoring Listserv. The current TAA Listserv will only remain active for a few months to allow everyone to switch over to the new Listservs. You can choose to subscribe to one or both. Instructions for subscribing can be found in this News Alert. Please take advantage of these Listservs as a way to network with your fellow members. They have a lot of wisdom to share.
There's still time to register for the 2008 TAA Conference in Las Vegas, June 19-21. We especially encourage our Las Vegas members to attend. TAA Conferences are a great way to learn more about textbook and/or academic authoring while networking with your fellow authors.
I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Kim Pawlak Associate Executive Director Text and Academic Authors Association Send me an email (608) 687-3106

Reinforce textbook adoptions with promotional calendar
by Kim Pawlak
Physical geography author Robert Christopherson recently published a calendar to promote the seventh edition of his award-winning textbook, Geosystems. The calendar's two opening pages describe the strengths and new features of the new edition, and list the accompanying student and instructor supplements. The calendar itself features factoids that match physical geography and Earth systems science events, as well as photos for each month depicting physical geography subjects, such as the rapeseed crop in full bloom in northern Scottland; frost-shattered rock in Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean; and a birch forest in south-central Norway.
