KECC CHRONICLE - OCTOBER 21, 2011

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK - CHANGING LIVES
Henry's Story
Try to imagine what it is like to go through life not being able to hear. For many, this is an everyday reality, but because of your donations to KECC, Henry won't have to. Henry is one of the many children served through the KECC Charities. When he was 5 weeks old, he started therapy at Lexington Hearing and Speech Center (LHSC) because he had failed a specialized hearing test three times. At birth, he was only able to hear at 120 decibels, which is like sitting next to an airplane not being able to hear the engine. His audiologist recommended that his mother Emily take him to LHSC, where the staff could better serve Henry and answer her questions. LHSC is funded by multiple KECC Charities. Through the help of their staff and two "cochlear" implants, Henry's hearing is now at 15 decibels for most frequencies. This is comparable to the hearing of the average person. LHSC also prepared Emily for the most likely scenarios in Henry's development. This gave her the peace of mind she needed and gave her options for his treatment. To this day, Emily says that coming to LHSC was the best thing she could have done. One of the things she loves is the constant support they offer. "When you sit down in their office and say I want my child to hear my voice or I want to hear my child's voice, they keep you focused on that goal and help you get there." Unfortunately, Henry's hearing problem isn't unique. Across the state, there are kids like him that need help right now. Without the support of KECC, LHSC and other agencies will not be able to provide as many services as they otherwise could. For most, it's hard to imagine going through life with being able to hear. Please take a moment to make a pledge through KECC, so that children like Henry don't have to. Thank you for your generosity.
