The Step Up For Kids Conference goes local, hosts regional events Every year, United Way of Kentucky and the other sponsors of Children's Advocacy Day at the Capitol have held a single, statewide Step Up for Kids Conference in central Kentucky. This year we're coming to you!
Advocates, policymakers, community leaders, and others who care about children will gather in the coming months for five Step Up for Kids Regional Conferences! The first will be held Western Kentucky on November 9, 2011. The other conferences will be held in Eastern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Lexington and Louisville. Topics of discussion will include issues currently facing Kentucky's kids and families, the solutions presented in the Blueprint for Kentucky's Children Agenda, and how to raise our voices in Frankfort to make positive change. This is an ideal opportunity for local United Ways, their board members and partner organizations to get connected with early childhood advocacy efforts in Frankfort, without traveling to the Capitol.

Segmenting Communications - Why it matters
No matter what role we have with a non-profit, from board member to staff, at some point we are called on to represent our organization. We also know that how we communicate with our constituents may differ depending on the audience.
Earlier this week, Network For Good hosted an important webinar explaining why "segmenting communications" is an important tool for every non-profit, and how to use that tool to achieve results. The webinar was entitled A Scientist in Your Communications Department: Segmenting Messages, Customizing Content, Delivering Results (the archived presentation can be viewed here).
Highlights include:
- What is segmentation?
- How and why to avoid irrelevant communications
- Tips for making an impact
- Tips about fundraising activities
- Tiered segmentation and how to use it
- Tips for understanding demographics
- What not to do, what to do instead, and more
This hour-long presentation is worth watching for anyone who communicates for your organization.

An accounting procedures template and more
Every United Way, whatever its size, requires sound business operations to enable it to successfully carry out mission-critical work. First and foremost, effective and efficient business support functions, including financial management and control, are critical to earning public trust in your organizations stewardship of donor/investor funds.
In addition to the United Way Standards of Excellence, which cover best practices for every aspect of United Way's work, it is helpful to look to the broader non-profit world for guidance on those practices that are common to all of us - such as operations.
Check out this recently published accounting procedures manual template from Blue Avocado. Whether or not your organization has excellent accounting procedures, or you have been "meaning to update those" for years, the article is worth reviewing. Other linked resources include:
