Nick's Story: A Crusade Kid Reaches a Milestone

For a child who doesn't walk or talk and is also blind, play time with other children can be a problem.  Luckily for Nick Jones, Luhr Elementary has come up with a way to keep him participating, even in gym class.

Gym time at Luhr Elementary means everyone participates including Nick and his classmates from Joanne Will's special needs group.

Wills says, "We help the kids hold up their arms and put their arms down.  That's about the most that Nick can do because he can't walk, so he stays in his chair." But even from his chair, Nick gets to take part.  Martial Arts Instructor Brandon Thomas tailors these lessons to the children's capabilities.

Thomas says, "When we're working with special needs children, we try to really focus on getting on their level and building them up from there."

Ms. Wills says that approach is helping all the children in her class.  And the benefits go beyond physical exercise for Nick.  "I think it's helped him a lot because he's been able to get motivated.  I think he feels good, feels energized that he's with all of us.  It's a social thing for him.  He loves being with other kids and being social."

Nick recently reached a major milestone--with a little help, he got to break his first board! (Click here to watch the video.)

Because of your donations through KECC, Nick and thousands of other kids with special needs are able to participate in activities like these.  The WHAS Crusade for Children and the other KECC Charities work with families like Nick's every day.  Thanks to you, there are success stories like this one all across Kentucky.  Take a moment to share Nick's story with a coworker.  Have a story of your own? Visit our "Tell your story" page and share how the KECC Charities have changed your life!

With KECC 'People Helping People' is a year-round effort

There may only be two weeks left in the KECC, but that is plenty of time to make a big difference for struggling Kentucky individuals and families all year long.  Thank you for your continued hard work and generosityThe numbers below show that state employees are truly 'People Helping People'.    Together, lets make these last two weeks count!

There are plenty of special events happening throughout the state, but it's not too late to collect payroll deduction pledge forms.  If you are having a halloween party or chili cook-off, keep a stack of pledge forms by the chili bowls and ask your co-workers if they have made a pledge.  We can do it!
