KECC CHRONICLE - OCTOBER 7, 2011

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK - CHANGING LIVES
Debbie's Story
Being a parent can be rough at times. People are trained to be teachers, doctors, machine operators and more, but unfortunately few people are trained to be parents. Thanks to your donations to Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky (PCAK), Parent Education and Support Groups are available throughout the state. Because of funding, training and technical assistance from PCAK, agencies are able to provide programming to parents who want to prevent or cease the abuse of their children. The following letter is just one example of many. It was written by Debbie, a parent and grandparent who attended TriCo Mentoring's parent education and support classes funded through PCAK. This class is facilitated by Dreama, who is mentioned in the letter. Recently PCAK awarded Debbie with a certificate of appreciation for her dedication and work towards preventing the abuse and neglect of children in her community. 4-15-11 I would like to thank Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky for recognizing the work I have done. However, I feel Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky should receive the greatest award of all. If it had not been for you, I would not be where I am today.
Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky made it possible for Dreama to help people like me. To be honest there are no words or awards that could thank you enough. If you could have known me before I got into Dreama's program then you could see first-hand how it changed my life for the better. It has helped my depression and self-esteem.
I started this program in April of 2008. At the time, everyone was hiding from me.... because of the verbal abuse they would go through. After this program, I started working for the Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center in April of 2010. Now the people who hid from me are looking for me to work with them. That touches my heart and puts a big smile on my face.Dreama's program still helps me to grow stronger and better. I don't know what I would do without it. Looking back now, I didn't like the person I was. If I could have, I would have divorced myself. I love climbing up this ladder--helping to prevent child abuse and making a difference in people's lives....Thank you from the bottom of my heart.--Debbie Thanks to you, Debbie has been able to turn her life around. The program above is just one example of the many ways that PCAK and the other KECC Charities invest your donations in communities across the Commonwealth. Share these stories with your coworkers. There is still time to make a difference! With four weeks left in the Campaign, we need everyone--Cabinet Secretaries, Constitutional Officers, KECC Coordinators and Volunteers--to reach out to your co-workers and ask them to consider making a pledge through KECC!
Earlier this week, Secretary Sparrow wrote a letter to all state employees. She reminded us that there are times when each of us needs help. During those tough times, the KECC Charities are there, in every community across the Commonwealth. It is precisely because of your generosity that they are able to do their good work. Take these last few weeks to make a strong push to reach your Cabinet's goal!
A direct appeal from your office leadership can make a big difference! Holding a special event? Have pledge forms available in case they need one. Remind them that payroll deduction is the easiest way to give! Do you need a charity speaker to come to your office for a campaign group meeting? Contact Deby today at deby.davis@uwky.org!
