United Way of Southeastern Ky celebrates 2nd annual Founder's Day, and United Way of South Central Ky hosts "Day of Caring" event

United Way of Southeastern Kentucky
(UWSEKY) celebrated its second annual Founder's Day Dinner on September 20.  As a part of the event, UWSEKY announced the result of their new model for community investments instituted in 2010.

"Our 'seed money' approach to investing in the community has enabled us to increase gifts from $66,600 to over $90,000 this year" said Richard Crowe, Executive Director.  "And with each of our dollars being matched by three dollars from our partners, we were able to leverage over $360,000 for Southeastern Kentucky."

Congratulations to long-time UWSEKY advocates and volunteers, Rhonda Brashear and Jim McDannel, who were inducted into the UWSEKY Hall of Fame at the event.

United Way of South Central Kentucky (UWSCKY) recently hosted a "Day of Caring" event with employees from Kentucky Utilities (KU).  Volunteers helped to renovate Bethany House Abuse Shelter, a local United Way agency.  Activities included renovations to both the interior and exterior of the shelter, as well as the adjoining yard and playground.

Special thanks to Allison Wilburn, Lead Customer Representative with KU and member of the UWSCKY Board of Directors, as well as Jackie Bennett, Area Retail Operations Manager for KU, who organized the event.  Kentucky Utilities LIVES UNITED!

Who's the boss? This and other questions answered...

Boards have two responsibilities to the non-profits they serve: governance and support.  This week, Blue Avocado explores the difference between these two roles, defines the activities that are native to each, and determines who is reporting to whom based on the activity.  If you've ever heard someone in your organization say "The Board should _____" without distinguishing between the members acting as a whole or as individuals, this article is for you.

Election season is here...let's all be careful.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy posted an important reminder and link to a new paper from the Alliance for Justice (Washington, D.C.) last week, highlighting the "can's and can'ts" during election season.  With Kentucky's gubernatorial election upon us and the Presidential election season right around the corner, this 34-page paper offers a complete outline on how charities can ensure their Web sites don't violate IRS rules banning organizations from politicking.  Among the contents are the following recommendations.

Charities should:
  • be careful not to endorse political candidates on any part of their Web sites
  • separate their sites from those of affiliated advocacy organizations
  • almost never link to a page with political content
  • expand all policies to cover the organization's social media presence

Earlier this year, Rich Harwood, founder of the Harwood Institute, took part in United Way's Education Town Hall.

This December, the Institute and United Way are co-sponsoring the Harwood Institute Public Innovators lab.  This lab will help community leaders align their mission, resources and strategies to the community's capacity so that efforts at community change will have a greater chance of success.
