Kentucky 41st in KIDS COUNT Ranking of Child Well-Being

Extracted from an article by Kentucky Youth Advocates

Kentucky ranks 41st in the nation for over-all child well-being according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2011 KIDS COUNT Data Book.  The annual publication uses the best available data on ten key indicators to gauge the educational, social, economic, and physical well-being of children in each state.

The 2011 Data Book reports an 18 percent increase in the U.S. child poverty rate between 2000 and 2009. This increase means that 2.5 million more American children are living below the federal poverty line ($21,756 for a family of two adults and two children), and the gains made on this important measure in the late 1990's have been effectively wiped out.  In Kentucky, the percent of children living in poverty increased from 22 percent to 26 percent between 2000 and 2009, moving Kentucky's rank on this indicator from 43rd to 48th.

Board Governance in Trying Times - 5 Goals

The National Council of Nonprofits recently published this article, sharing various tools to help boards govern, specifically during difficult economic and social times.  The article suggests that the following five goals (and the resources they link to) can not only guide non-profit leaders and their organizations through challenging circumstances, but help them become stronger in the process.
  • Goal #1: Diversify the Boardroom - Experience and Perspective
  • Goal #2: Cultivate the Right Culture - Trust and Transparency
  • Goal #3: Future Planning - Preparing for Transitions and Succession
  • Goal #4:  Embrace Innovation - Using Technology to Your Advantage
  • Goal #5:  Financial Literacy - Building Financial Leadership
UWKY reports to the Public Service Commission on 2-1-1 progress

Kentucky 2-1-1Yesterday, United Way of Kentucky submitted its annual report on 2-1-1 implementation to the Kentucky Public Service Commission.  United Way 2-1-1 is the primary information and referral hotline across the country for connecting people needing assistance to available community services.  Currently, about 47% of Kentucky's population is serviced by 2-1-1.

In 2010, two-thirds of all individuals calling 2-1-1 requested referrals for income support and assistance, housing and utilities assistance or assistance in getting food.  Calls to 2-1-1 across the state increased over 2009, to 89,740.  The 22-page report includes detailed community calling data for each of the 2-1-1 call centers.  To read the full report to the Public Service Commission, click here.
