Metro United Way Walks United and United Way of Greater Cincinnati Receives $1M Social Innovation Grant

Metro United Way - Walk United - September 10, Iroquois Park, Louisville

"If you want to walk fast, go alone; if you want to walk far, go with others."  This old African proverb perfectly captures what Metro United Way (Greater Louisville) and WALK UNITED are all about!

We invite you to join us for the second annual Metro United Way UPS Walk United. This family-friendly 5k run/walk will take place on September 10, 2011 at Iroquois Park.  Approximately 1,000 runners, walkers, and their family and friends will come together to Live United!  The walk will support Metro United Way's ongoing efforts to meet the needs of today and reduce the needs of tomorrow.

In addition to the food, fun and entertainment at the event, all registered participants will receive an official 2011 Metro United Way UPS Walk United t-shirt!!  Want to learn more?  Contact Sommer Lally at sommer.lally@metrounitedway.org, or register today at metrounitedway.kintera.org

United Way of Greater Cincinnati Receives $1 Million Federal "Social Innovation" Grant

United Way's business strategies and the work we are doing to mobilize communities is getting noticed and attracting resources.  Recognizing cutting-edge programs that are creating real community impact, the Corporation for National and Community Service awarded three social innovation grants this year to United Way.  That's significant, and it's an affirmation that the innovative work United Way is doing in the Northern Kentucky region and around the country is on target.

In addition to the renewed funding for United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Mile High United Way and United Way for Southeastern Michigan received grants for their work in early childhood learning.  These grants are good news for all of us and show that our community impact strategies and the Campaign for the Common Good are taking us in the right direction.  This is a proud moment not only for our colleagues in Cincinnati, Denver and Detroit, but for our entire network.  Together, our work in education, income and health is helping mobilize volunteers and resources, and it's strengthening our communities!

Boards: How you can help the new Executive Director succeed

Currently and over the past couple years, 8 United Ways in Kentucky have gone through the process of transitioning to new leadership.  Even right here at UWKY, we are working to bring on a new President.  These transitions can be challenging for both the staff and volunteer leadership, but according to Blue Avocado (our favorite non-profit governance e-newsletter), with a little extra effort by the board of directors, the change can be a smooth one!

Whether your organization is transitioning now, you have a great relationship with your new leadership, or you are proud of your long-time staff executive, we suggest taking a look at the twelve ideas they recommend.

Child Care Center Regulation and Oversight: Kentucky is Failing

United Ways across Kentucky know the importance of quality child care and Pre-K programs for the future success of Kentucky's children, and we are working to help ensure that every child has access to these programs.  This updated report from the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) scores all 50 states on 15 key indicators of oversight and program requirements for child care centers.  The report finds that while progress has been made since the last update in 2009, half of the states, including Kentucky, still earned a failing grade.  Click here for the full report, or click here for Kentucky's rating.
