Kentucky United Way 2-1-1 calls for information and assistance increase significantly in 2010
The number of individuals calling Kentucky's United Way 2-1-1 hotline for information and assistance increased significantly in 2010 over the previous year. Call volume increased by an average of 16% over 2009, with some calling areas showing an increase of as much as 40% over last year. The following list shows those needs which experienced a significant increase in call volume:
- Clothing, personal and household needs: up 4.7%
- Housing and utility assistance: up 55.1%
- Income support and assistance: up 3.3%
- Individual, family and community support: up 82.4%
- Information services: up 91.4%
- Legal, consumer and public safety: up 107.2%
- Transportation: up 30.7%
There were 92,341 total calls to 2-1-1 in 2010. Some needs showed an overall decrease in call volume. Disaster-related calls dropped more than 95% due to the lack of emergency events in 2010. Education-related calls decreased by 68% and calls related to employment decreased by 52%. United Way 2-1-1 is an information and referral hotline, providing individuals and families with a shortcut through the often difficult maze of available health and human services. United Way of the Bluegrass and Metro United Way offer board training
Kentucky American Water, in partnership with United Way of the Bluegrass, is presenting Get On Board, an initiative to train, recruit, place and retain underrepresented people on non-profit boards of directors in Central Kentucky. Get On Board is designed to build a stronger community by increasing board effectiveness and developing diversity in non-profit governance. Participants will complete a free, ten-week training program that teaches board governance and the necessary skills for effective leadership. Lexington-regional residents who are seeking community involvement on a leadership level are urged to apply by March 1. Watch a short video, learn more or download an application today.

File your 990 electronically? Better check Guidestar for errors...
According to an article by Brian Todd at BKD, LLP, If you filed your 2008 Form 990 electronically with the IRS between January 2009 and December 2010, you may note some errors in your automated 990 as it appears on the non-profit information database, Guidestar. United Way of Central Kentucky seeks administrative assistant
United Way of Central Kentucky (Elizabethtown) is seeking an experienced administrative assistant with a minimum of five years experience in the administrative support field. UWCK is seeking someone with excellent organizational skills, including the ability to analyze, synthesize and present data; organize multiple and varied assignments in a timely manner with attention to detail and accuracy, and a good communicator.

United Way of Laurel County hosts week-long telethon and auction
United Way of Laurel County began a week-long evening telethon and auction Monday night. The "Talent and Telethon" portion of the event ended yesterday, but the auction will run Wednesday through Friday, from 7-11 p.m., finishing on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is being broadcast via the internet at www.uwlcky.org, and local residents can catch the action on Time Warner Channel 12, New Wave Channel 7, and WFTG radio.
