Logsdon, director of Audubon Area, dies of heart attack By Keith Lawrence, Messenger-Inquirer Published: Sunday, December 19, 2010 12:07 AM CST
Ronald Lee Logsdon, executive director of Audubon Area Community Services Inc. since its inception, died of a massive heart attack Saturday evening at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was 67.
"I understand he was putting up Christmas lights at his home when he had a massive heart attack," Daviess County Judge-Executive Reid Haire said. Haire is chairman of the Audubon Area board.
"It's such a tragedy," Haire said. "Ron was planning to retire in a couple of years. It's such a loss to the community."
After his graduation from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss., Logsdon, a Daviess County native, pastored two Baptist churches (one in Mississippi, one in Kentucky), was a social worker, employment interviewer and manpower specialist with the old Kentucky Department of Economic Security and the Mississippi Employment Security Commission before returning home in 1970.
In November 1971, he became executive director of the four-county Owensboro Area Economic Opportunity Council, which merged with the Henderson-Union-Webster Development Council in February 1975 to form Audubon Area.
Logsdon was named executive director of the new organization and had held the post ever since.
Between 1975 and 2001, the agency grew from $1 million in funding and 65 staff members to more than $50 million in annual funding, with nearly 900 staff members.
In 1975, Audubon Area served seven counties -- the Green River Area. Today, 34 counties are in the service area, including nine Pennyrile Area counties, 10 Barren River Area counties and eight Purchase Area counties.
And the agency's Kentucky Intensive Services Program serves all Kentucky counties except for three northern ones, which Audubon Area subcontracts to an independent provider.
Haire said the budget has grown to $80 million today.
The agency includes childcare programs, counseling services, Green River Intra-Transit System, Head Start, KentuckyWorks, Senior Service Corps and Assisted Housing Services.
"Ron was involved in many activities," Haire said. "He was recognized as a premier leader. He will be hard to replace."
In 1983, Logsdon was a candidate for the Owensboro City Commission.
He was a former governor of the Kiwanis Club's Kentucky-Tennessee District; former chairman of the Wendell Foster's Campus For Developmental Disabilities; and a former executive director of Leadership Owensboro.
Arrangements are pending at Glenn Funeral Home.
