United Ways take action on longest day of the year Each year, United Ways across the country mark the longest day of the year, June 21, as a Day of Action, putting that extra daylight to positive use. Here are a few examples of what United Ways in Kentucky accomplished this week.
Heart of Kentucky United Way (HKUW), based in Danville, engaged hundreds of volunteers in over 50 service projects throughout Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties. Projects included the construction of 5 wheelchair ramps, flood cleanup, and elderly assistance, the Danville Advocate-Messenger reported.
"The Sportsman's Club in Paint Lick was under 38 feet of water
during the flooding," Libby Suttles, marketing director for HKUW, said Wednesday. "That is one of the only community
gathering places, and they needed a lot of help. There was still mud
caked all over the place. The volunteers pulled debris off the shelter,
swept it out, scraped paint. There is still a lot to be done, but they
told us that those eight people got more done in three hours than in all
the time since the flooding."

Louisville's Metro United Way (MUW) "Stuff the Bus" campaign collected school supplies and kits for kindergartners on Monday.
Volunteers from Target and Middletown Seventh Day Adventist Church helped collect hundreds of dollars worth of supplies to benefit 25 Camp Kindergarten sites in Jefferson County, KY and Floyd County, IN. MUW will continue to accept donations through the summer.
"It's a fun way to help kids get off to a
positive start and that's important to us. One of our long-range
goals for the community is to have all our kids arrive at kindergarten
ready to be successful in school and in life," said Joe Tolan, MUW President and CEO. Read more here and here.
United Way of Franklin County teamed up with volunteers from Lowe's, Kiwanis, AARP, and others, leading nine work projects around the Capital area. These projects included laying flooring, painting, cleaning and repairing trails at local non-profits and senior centers.
United Way of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky (UWGC) celebrated the Day of Action with their "Health Fair on the Square" event. Attendees received free health screenings, met with health coaches, learned about the corporate challenge to
get healthy and had the chance to win their own LIVE UNITED gear.
199 individuals
filled out "Health Pledge" cards to set goals for improving their own
health and supporting the health of their community. The pledges resulted in commitments to donate canned food, increase exercise, advocate for a healthier community, and volunteer for health projects.

Ready to Grow...Ready to
Learn...Ready to Succeed The Governor's Task Force on Early Childhood Development and Education adopts a new school-readiness definition
In
Kentucky, school readiness means that each child enters school ready to engage
in and benefit from early learning experiences that best promote the child's
success. The Governor's Task Force on Early
Childhood Development and Education adopted a new school-readiness
definition last month to ensure Kentucky's children have that opportunity.
The
purpose of this definition is to give parents, communities, child care and preschool
providers an overview of what primary schools expect from their incoming students and to provide guidance to families and communities on how
to prepare children for school. An included "readiness profile" provides teachers, child care providers, and
parents a tool to address the specific strengths and needs of
each child.

Challenges for United Ways
The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Volume XXII, No. 14, June 17, 2010
Donations
to United Ways, Jewish federations, advocacy groups, and other "community-benefit" charities fell sharply last year. Recovery this year is
uncertain, though the improving economy may make a big difference.
Mesa
United Way, in Arizona, is trying to right its ship this year after falling
$600,000 short of its $4-million fund-raising goal in 2009. But
lingering effects of last year's economic woes may hamper its efforts. As the organization struggles to meet its goal, it is also collecting
clothes and household goods to stock Helen's Hope Chest, a program it started
last year to help families caring for foster children.
"We
can look at the bright side and say the donations of goods is worth another half
a million dollars," says Dan Wollam, Mesa's interim chief executive. "And we have to think about continuing to
create alternatives like that for people to give even when money is
tight." Read the full article.
