Matching Grant Achieved: Thank You!
Dean Witter Foundation Challenge Match

Friend of Canopy

I hope your new year is off to a smooth start.

Canopy's year certainly is! Thanks to all of you who responded to our appeal, we realized the full potential of the Dean Witter Foundation Challenge Match. Through the month of December, all new and increased gifts were doubled. These gifts will go a long way with Canopy, and will help us achieve our goal to plant 1,000 shade and fruit trees at schools in East Palo Alto.

Please grab your brand new calendar as we have a busy year ahead of us. To start, I hope you plan to come to our Annual Mayor's Tree Planting next week.  Read on for more info on this and our busy plantings and Tree Walks schedule.

Thank you for your support!  We could CM 2011not plant and protect our local urban forests without your help.

Sincerely and gratefully,

Dry, Cold December = Thirsty, Frosty Trees
Water Advised for All Young Trees
From the desk of Michael

It has been a very cold December for our local trees. Frost has certainly been nipping at the leaves of trees and shrubs alike. Also, December has had almost zero precipitation.  Our trees are thirsty and frostbitten.

Young Roots Need Water

Trees in California depend on a wet winter to sustain the dry summers.  However, this year, we have had a very dry December and January so far.  While the cool weather is keeping the root zones of most trees protected, recently planted trees may need to be irrigated, especially evergreens.

For tips on how to water your trees, click here.

How to Counter Freezing Temperatures

Recent temperatures have been cold enough to freeze your trees' buds, blossoms, fruit, leaves, or twigs.  Most susceptible trees include: Citrus, Jacaranda, Catalpa, Oleander, Eugenia, and other tropical or sub-tropical plants. Young trees with dry roots are especially vulnerable.

Thank you for helping us protect and care for our local trees!

Yours for our trees,
