Collect
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

11th Step Meditation
Contemplative Prayer: A Way of Recovery
Join us for an hour on the second Saturday morning of each month in Cummings Chapel at 9:30 a.m. to practice contemplative prayer as a means to transformation. There will be a welcome and introduction to the hour, then time for silent prayer of the heart and meditation. This will be followed by conversation.
If you are not familiar with the practice, come and hear about it. Come back if it is a fit for where you are on your path on the journey.

Parents Love the Cathedral School!
The Cathedral School recently asked for feedback from the parents of their students.
One parent had this to say:
"We love The Cathedral School for so many reasons! We feel like the teachers treat us like family and have taught all of us - our sweet baby Grey, my husband and myself - so much!" |

Have You Had Your Sabbath Rest?
 | | The Very Reverend Kate Moorehead, Dean |
Dear Friends,
This week, I have moved from the controversy of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church to the peaceful setting of the largest Episcopal Conference Center in the nation.
Episcopalians gather from all over at Kanuga to relax, pray, study scripture and just play together. Located on top of a mountain in North Carolina, Kanuga is a beautiful setting for people of all ages to enjoy Sabbath time, from infants to people in their eighties. We meet at meals, pray in the evenings and share in a variety of programs.
The mountain air coupled with the lack of cell phone coverage makes me breathe deeply. I am reminded of how Jesus frequently snuck off, either at night or in the wee hours of the morning, and walked up a mountain to pray. Jesus knew that time alone with God was vital. So he found a way up the mountain.
Have you found a place and time to pray? Do you take Sabbath rest? If Jesus could find a way to be alone with God, even while crowds were clambering to meet him, surely we can find a place to pray too.
In Christ's love,
Kate+ |
Special Concert this Friday!
The River City Men's Chorus, directed by Wayne Bailey, will perform a free concert tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. at the cathedral. Music will include a broad range of selections ranging from classical and jazz to gospel and spirituals. |
St. John's is getting a little more green! You may have noticed that our Sunday bulletins are now smaller in size. Because we are encouraging our parishioners to use the prayer books in the pews, we are using a smaller paper size, which will mean less paper usage in the long run. Also, we won't be printing as many copies of our bulletin announcements since almost all the material is available in the e-Eagle, and you can now download a copy of the announcements here. You are welcome to pick up a copy on Sunday at the back of the church if you'd like to take one home. |

CALLING ALL SERVICE MINISTERS! TRAININGS OFFERED IN AUGUST!
WHO? All current Acolytes, Chalice Ministers, Lectors and Vergers (If you are interested in learning more about these ministries, you are invited too!)
WHAT? Service Minister training conducted by Dean Kate, Father Perry and Vergers in updated protocol. New customaries will be distributed along with a special overview by the clergy for a better understanding of why we do the things we do during our worship.
You must attend the overview session AND training sessions related to all ministries you serve. You will not be scheduled to serve at the altar until you complete your training sessions! Ongoing trainings will be offered quarterly hereafter. You may choose from several time slots.
WHEN? Overview Session (choose one): Wednesday, August 1, 6 - 7 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Ministry-Specific Training Sessions: Ministry specific trainings for Acolytes, Lectors and Chalice Ministers will be offered simultaneously on several dates to encourage 100% participation, but you will only be able to attend one ministry training per day. (Pick one session for each ministry group you belong to. For example: if you are an acolyte and a lector, you will need to select two separate dates): Wednesday, August 8, 6 - 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 10 - 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 6 - 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 10 - 11:30 a.m. The instruction on these four dates will be identical and attendance will be noted at every session.
WHERE? Overview Session: Nave Ministry Specific Training Session: 1) Lectors: North Transept 2) Chalice Ministers: South Transept 3) Acolytes: Chancel
WHY? It is important that all service ministers are up-to-date on current and new protocol. It is also vital for everyone to understand the liturgy, terminology and meaning behind our entire service of worship. The sessions will provide updated literature, opportunities for questions as well as hands-on practice. Clergy and Vergers will be conducting all trainings. This is also an excellent opportunity for those who are curious and considering signing up to be a service minister. Registration is not required; just show up!

Beginning August 1st, from 6-7 p.m. in Cummings Chapel, this four week class, led by our own Canon for Music Tim Tuller, will be a guided tour of the lives, works and legacies of some of the most colorful eccentrics in sacred music from the 17th through the 20th centuries. Walk through the early days of the English reformation, the Baroque and the Romantic ages, all the way to the modern era. As we explore several composers' great contributions to the canon of classical music, we'll also discuss their lives, loves, passions and perversions, as well as their spiritual insights... or lack thereof!

| Summer Fun Downtown!

Formerly known as VBS, "Summer Fun Downtown" will be a week of engaging activities for kids from 5 to 8 p.m. from August 6th to the 10th. All children from Pre-K to 5th grade are invited to come, whether they attend St. John's or not, so encourage your children to bring their friends! During the first hour, children will check in and enjoy a "snack" supper. For the rest of the evening, children will have fun acting out Bible stories, making crafts and music together, and enjoying other recreational activities. The nursery will also be available for younger children during this time. Volunteers are welcome! We can use either adult or youth volunteers to assist with the children. Prior registration is required to attend. You can pick up a registration form at the back of the church, at the office, or download and print out the form here and return or mail back to the office. We are also in need of donations toward our expenses, so please contribute if you are able! If you would like to give a donation, please make out your check to St. John's Cathedral and put "Summer Fun Downtown" on the memo line. |
