Collect
O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Summary of General Convention 2012
 | | The Very Reverend Kate Moorehead, Dean |
Dear People of the Cathedral,
As I write this, I am in the airport on my way home from two days at our church's General Convention in Indianapolis. As with prior conventions, I leave with hope for the future, concern about our hugely legislative process of decision-making, and grateful to have seen old friends.
I came to Indianapolis to speak at the Episcopal Church Women's Triennial, a meeting that takes place right next door to General Convention. I was able to do two book-signings and to sit in on a few legislative sessions. Here are the major decisions made by this 77th General Convention:
1. The House of Bishops and the House of Deputies approved the trial use of a liturgy to bless monogamous gay relationships. The motion passed by about 75 percent in both houses. This means that each bishop has permission to allow this liturgy within his or her diocese. Our Bishop, The Right Rev. S. Johnson Howard, has stated that he will not allow this liturgy in the Diocese of Florida at this time.
2. Our Bishop led a successful motion proposing to study the restructuring of the entire legislative process of the Episcopal Church. This will be a three-year-study. The results of this study will be presented at the next General Convention. The motion to conduct this study was passed unanimously in both houses. This indicates that there will be significant change coming soon.
3. The budget of the national church was severely reduced this year. Endowment income will be invested in a new development office and greater portions of the main office at 815 in New York will be leased out. It is not clear how much central governance will be funded in the future.
4. The church laws were amended to state that "No one shall be denied rights, status or access to an equal place in the life, worship, and governance of this Church because of race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disabilities or age." Previously "gender identity and expression" were not included in that language. This means we will not keep anyone from entering the discernment process for ordination based solely on an individual's gender identity and expression. This does not mean that any person will or will not be ordained, but simply that all persons have equal access to the discernment process.
Our General Convention is always full of energy. The worship is huge and glorious; then people go back to arguing in groups. Decisions are made through prayer and a voting process. It is messy. But I have hope that we are looking with some focus on the great costs of gathering in such large numbers and prayerfully considering if there might be a better way. The church is changing. And we are trying to embrace that change.
In Christ's love,
Kate+ |
St. John's is getting a little more green! You may have noticed that our Sunday bulletins are now smaller in size. Because we are encouraging our parishioners to use the prayer books in the pews, we are using a smaller paper size, which will mean less paper usage in the long run. Also, we won't be printing as many copies of our bulletin announcements since almost all the material is available in the e-Eagle, and you can now download a copy of the announcements here. You are welcome to pick up a copy on Sunday at the back of the church if you'd like to take one home. |
Will you help with our Family Promise project?
St. John's will again host about three homeless families in our Sunday School classrooms July 15-22, overnight from dinnertime through breakfast. These families with children have been screened through Family Promise of Jacksonville, a non-profit organization that works with churches to help people who are in economic distress find jobs and permanent housing. During the day, families will be transported to Family Promises offices, and their children will participate in summer programs.
We need volunteers who can provide □Breakfast one day or more □Groceries, such as fruit, snacks, juice, milk □Dinner one night or more □A donation to help pay for supplies
We also need volunteers who are willing to
□stay overnight at church one night □stay overnight two nights or more □provide a donation to buy needed items □stop by church to visit with our guests □provide linens, towels or toiletry items
Email Theresa Johnson your name, email address and phone number at tjohnson@jaxcathedral.org if you would like to help in any of these ways.

Beginning August 1st, from 6-7 p.m. in Cummings Chapel, this four week class, led by our own Canon for Music Tim Tuller, will be a guided tour of the lives, works and legacies of some of the most colorful eccentrics in sacred music from the 17th through the 20th centuries. Walk through the early days of the English reformation, the Baroque and the Romantic ages, all the way to the modern era. As we explore several composers' great contributions to the canon of classical music, we'll also discuss their lives, loves, passions and perversions, as well as their spiritual insights... or lack thereof!

| Summer Fun Downtown!

Formerly known as VBS, "Summer Fun Downtown" will be a week of engaging activities for kids from 5 to 8 p.m. from August 6th to the 10th. All children from Pre-K to 5th grade are invited to come, whether they attend St. John's or not, so encourage your children to bring their friends! During the first hour, children will check in and enjoy a "snack" supper. For the rest of the evening, children will have fun acting out Bible stories, making crafts and music together, and enjoying other recreational activities. The nursery will also be available for younger children during this time. Volunteers are welcome! We can use either adult or youth volunteers to assist with the children. Prior registration is required to attend. You can drop by the office to pick up a registration form, or download and print out the form here and return or mail back to the office. We are also in need of donations toward our expenses, so please contribute if you are able! If you would like to give a donation, please make out your check to St. John's Cathedral and put "Summer Fun Downtown" on the memo line. |

Parents Love the Cathedral School!
The Cathedral School recently asked for feedback from the parents of their students.
One parent had this to say:
"My daughter has been at the Cathedral School for the past year in the Pre-K 2 class. I love all of the activities they do in class. Mrs. Gray is such a warm person and my daughter took to her immediately. This made it much easier to leave her during the day; she now has Mrs. Huggins as her teacher and loves it just as much! There are so many things she learns from being at the school: new songs, her numbers, the alphabet, drawing and social skills. I like the way the teachers incorporate Christian education that is appropriate for each age level. I am very thankful that my daughter is able to attend The Cathedral School!" |
