Amen.

11th Step Meditation

Contemplative Prayer: A Way of Recovery

Join us for an hour on the second Saturday morning of each month in Cummings Chapel at 9:30 a.m. to practice contemplative prayer as a means to transformation. There will be a welcome and introduction to the hour, then time for silent prayer of the heart and meditation. This will be followed by conversation.

If you are not familiar with the practice, come and hear about it. Come back if it is a fit for where you are on your path on the journey.

Hosted by Dianne Larson and Tim Lynch

Pilgrimage 2012: Learning and Bonding in
San Francisco

Ghirardelli Square
Our pilgrims at Ghirardelli Square

The breathtaking sights, delicious food, wonderful fellowship, good friends, and spiritual epiphanies we were able to experience on this trip were far better than I could have hoped or imagined. Even though it involved some minor injuries, some cold weather and lots of people getting sick, I feel extremely fortunate to be able to have lead this great group of students and leaders on this wonderful journey across the country.

During our trip, we had fun visiting many beautiful spaces, including Muir Woods, Grace Cathedral, St. Gregory of Nyssa's Episcopal Church and the Japanese Tea Garden. We were also blessed in our visit to the Community of St. Francis, as we volunteered at the VBS program at St. Gregory's and in our times together as we listened to some great devotions. We learned about the spiritual ties that bind us to each other and to other Christian communities. Our interactions among ourselves and with the wonderful people that we met throughout our journey taught us so much about how the Holy Spirit can work through us. Though we came across some challenges, we met them together as a community, which made all the difference. Thank you to everyone who helped make this amazing trip a reality.

Blessings,

Aaron Mayeski

St. John's is getting a little more green!

You may have noticed that our Sunday bulletins are now smaller in size. Because we are encouraging our parishioners to use the prayer books in the pews, we are using a smaller paper size, which will mean less paper usage in the long run. Also, we won't be printing as many copies of our bulletin announcements since almost all the material is available in the e-Eagle, and you can now download a copy of the bulletin here.  You are welcome to pick up a copy on Sunday at the back of the church if you'd like to take one home.

Get trained to use defibrillators

Have you noticed we have two Automated External Defibrillators (thanks to a generous benefactor) at the cathedral? An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat them through defibrillation, before the rescue crew arrives. We are offering training of the use of these SIMPLE devices for anyone who is interested in learning how to use them. You DO NOT have to be a medical professional to operate these EXTREMELY user friendly devices. The 15 minute training will be offered on this Sunday, July 8, at noon. Location: Ingram Lounge. Please be prompt as we will start right on time. You never know when you might be in the right place at the right time to save a life. That's worth 15 minutes of your time.

Synergy Lunch at Uptown Market
this Sunday, July 8th!

Synergy is a young adults group at St. John's for folks who want to stay connected through faith, fun, and Christian community. We will meet in the back of the church by the great west doors after the 10:30 service. We can caravan to lunch if anyone needs a ride. If you prefer to meet us at Uptown Market, we should all be there at about 12:30. If you have any questions, contact Mark Anderson or Aaron Mayeski. We hope to see you for good food and great conversation!

Thank you St. John's family!

Once again, the generosity of the parish family is incredible! We were able to send $1,840 to Peru for current missionaries to continue to do their good work serving the poorest of the poor. We will also be able to send $1,577 to The Wounded Warrior Project to assist in their good work ministering to our returning service men and women.

Will you help with our Family Promise project?

St. John's will again host about three homeless families in our Sunday School classrooms July 15-22, overnight from dinnertime through breakfast. These families with children have been screened through Family Promise of Jacksonville, a non-profit organization that works with churches to help people who are in economic distress find jobs and permanent housing. During the day, families will be transported to Family Promises offices, and their children will participate in summer programs.

We need volunteers who can provide

                      Breakfast one day or more

Groceries, such as fruit, snacks, juice, milk

Dinner one night or more

A donation to help pay for supplies

We also need volunteers who are willing to

stay overnight at church one night

stay overnight two nights or more

provide a donation to buy needed items

stop by church to visit with our guests

provide linens, towels or toiletry items

Email Theresa Johnson your name, email address and phone number at tjohnson@jaxcathedral.org if you would like to help in any of these ways.

Parents Love the Cathedral School!

The Cathedral School recently asked for feedback from the parents of their students.

The McAneny Family had this to say:

"The education is superior; the first two months of kindergarten were a repeat of everything taught in

Pre-K 4.  I haven't found any other school that comes close to the level of learning at TCS.  The staff is warm, friendly and loving.  It truly is a family and my children feel loved & welcomed.  I'm also thankful for the Christian education.  We have been a part of the TCS family for six years and look forward to many more!  I love this amazing school!"

New Wednesday Evening Class:
"Misfit Musicians: Four Centuries of the Men of Sacred Music"

Beginning August 1st, from 6-7 p.m. in Cummings Chapel, this four week class, led by our own Canon for Music Tim Tuller, will be a guided tour of the lives, works and legacies of some of the most colorful eccentrics in sacred music from the 17th through the 20th centuries.  Walk through the early days of the English reformation, the Baroque and the Romantic ages, all the way to the modern era.  As we explore several composers' great contributions to the canon of classical music, we'll also discuss their lives, loves, passions and perversions, as well as their spiritual insights... or lack thereof!

Summer Fun Downtown!

Formerly known as VBS, "Summer Fun Downtown" will be a week of engaging activities for kids from 5 to 8 p.m. from August 6th to the 10th. All children from Pre-K to 5th grade are invited to come, whether they attend St. John's or not, so encourage your children to bring their friends! During the first hour, children will check in and enjoy a "snack" supper. For the rest of the evening, children will have fun acting out Bible stories, making crafts and music together, and enjoying other recreational activities. The nursery will also be available for younger children during this time. Volunteers are welcome! We can use either adult or youth volunteers to assist with the children. Prior registration is required to attend. You can drop by the office to pick up a registration form, or download and print out the form here and return or mail back to the office. We are also in need of donations toward our expenses, so please contribute if you are able! If you would like to give a donation, please make out your check to St. John's Cathedral and put "Summer Fun Downtown" on the memo line.
