BREAKFAST ANGELS
This Sunday's breakfast angels will be the Cathedral School. | |
Special Services and Wounded Warrior Collection in Honor of July 4th this Sunday
This coming Sunday, our Sunday morning services will follow the format found in the 1662 Prayer Book. Our readings will also be read from the 1769 King James Version. As several of the founding fathers of this nation were Anglicans, we celebrate the Sunday before July 4th by remembering them through the words and the liturgy that they heard. The Cathedral Brass will also perform several patriotic songs.

Also this Sunday, we will be taking up a collection for The Wounded Warrior Project. If you would like to make a donation, please make your checks payable to St. John's Cathedral, memo: Wounded Warrior. There will be special envelopes for Wounded Warrior donations in the pews.
Please join us this Sunday! |

The Anglican Legacy of our Founding Fathers
 | | The Very Reverend Kate Moorehead, Dean |
Richard Hooker, an Anglican priest back in the 1600's, wrote about how God gave human beings reason. The ability to think, doubt and question was a gift and not the enemy of faith, he wrote. His teachings would later be distilled down into what we call The Three Legged Stool. Anglicans rely on three sources of authority to determine the course of our lives: Scripture (The Bible as the revealed Word of God), Tradition (centuries of liturgy, saints and teachings) and Reason (the intellectual gifts of the human mind).
The Founding Fathers of this country were overwhelmingly Anglican. They were willing to think deeply, embrace a new form of government and to believe that this kind of government of the people, by the people and for the people was pleasing to God. They were extremely well-educated men whose studies of the Roman Senate and of great literature would be reflected in the documents they composed. Here is the religious make up of the authors of our nation's three founding documents:
Religious Affiliation of U.S. Founding Fathers #of % of
Episcopalian/Anglican 88 54.7%
Presbyterian 30 18.6%
Congregationalist 27 16.8%
Quaker 7 4.3%
Dutch Reformed/German Reformed 6 3.7%
Lutheran 5 3.1%
Catholic 3 1.9%
Huguenot 3 1.9%
Unitarian 3 1.9%
Methodist 2 1.2%
Calvinist 1 0.6%
TOTAL 204
This Sunday, we will celebrate the birth of this nation with the liturgy that would have been heard in 1776. Come sing, hear the beautiful music of the choir, organ, brass and timpani, and hear the words our Founding Fathers heard. Give thanks with us for our freedom.
God bless you.
In Christ's love,
Kate+

St. John's is getting a little more green! You may have noticed that our Sunday bulletins are now smaller in size. Because we are encouraging our parishioners to use the prayer books in the pews, we are using a smaller paper size, which will mean less paper usage in the long run. Also, we won't be printing as many copies of our bulletin announcements since almost all the material is available in the e-Eagle, and you can now download a copy of the bulletin here. You are welcome to pick up a copy on Sunday at the back of the church if you'd like to take one home. |
New Facilities Manager We are happy to announce that Tim Engemann has been hired as our new Facilities Manager. Tim has years of experience in the construction industry, and also served as head verger at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Please join us in welcoming him to the Cathedral staff. |

Get trained to use defibrillators
Have you noticed we have two Automated External Defibrillators (thanks to a generous benefactor) at the cathedral? An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat them through defibrillation, before the rescue crew arrives. We are offering training of the use of these SIMPLE devices for anyone who is interested in learning how to use them. You DO NOT have to be a medical professional to operate these EXTREMELY user friendly devices. The 15 minute training will be offered on the following dates: Sundays, July 1 and July 8 at noon. Location: Ingram Lounge. Please be prompt as we will start right on time. You never know when you might be in the right place at the right time to save a life. That's worth 15 minutes of your time.

If you prefer to meet us at Uptown Market, we should all be there at about 12:30. If you have any questions, contact Mark Anderson or Aaron Mayeski. We hope to see you for good food and great conversation! |
