Looking for a Summer Camp?  Check out Camp Weed!

Camp Weed offers some wonderful Summer Camp opportunities for youth from 3rd to 12th grades.  The summer schedule is divided up by weeklong sessions named after saints. Each session is specifically designed to host certain age groups. These sessions have different themes and age appropriate talks and activities. The 2012 Summer Schedule can be found on the Camp Weed homepage at www.campweed.org.  Campers may enjoy volleyball, swimming, archery, arts and crafts, nature trail walking and much more.  Going to camp is a beautiful experience that can squeeze a year's worth of Christian formation into a fun filled week in the woods.  The memories and bonds that are formed while attending a week at Camp Weed will truly last a lifetime.  You must register at least a week in advance before the session you sign up for begins, so reserve a space for your child now!  Contact Camp Weed for camper requirements and more information.  See what Aaron Mayeski says about summer camp here.

Summer Sermons to Focus on King David

Dean Kate
The Very Reverend
Kate Moorehead, Dean

Dear Friends,

Every Sunday, we at the Cathedral read Scripture from a set of assigned readings called the Lectionary. In this way, we read most of the Bible aloud in church within a period of three years. This is an ancient practice that unites churches across the world. It ensures that no preacher can select his or her Scripture to prove a point. Instead, the Scripture is given to us.

For the next four weeks, I will be preaching a sermon series on King David. The passages that we are given come from the first and second books of Samuel in the Old Testament. They tell us the story of the greatest king of Israel, who reigned in a golden age and shaped our understanding of God and the hope for a Messiah. David was the ancestor of Jesus.

David led a wild and crazy life, filled with mistakes and great devotion. Join me as we explore what his life can tell us about God's wild and crazy dance with us, for the next four Sundays, June 17 and 24, July 1 and 8.

God bless you all this summer.

In Christ's love,

Kate+

St. John's is getting a little more green!

You may have noticed that our Sunday bulletins are now smaller in size. Because we are encouraging our parishioners to use the prayer books in the pews, we are using a smaller paper size, which will mean less paper usage in the long run. Also, we won't be printing as many copies of our bulletin announcements since almost all the material is available in the e-Eagle, and you can now download a copy of the bulletin here.  You are welcome to pick up a copy on Sunday at the back of the church if you'd like to take one home.

  Men's Breakfast and Bible Study,
this Saturday 16th

We will meet at the Cathedral on Saturday, June 16, at
8 a.m. for breakfast, worship, and Bible study. Please bring your Bible, and read all of Colossians and Philemon before this Saturday. Find something from these letters that you would like to discuss with the group, and be prepared to articulate why it is of particular interest to you.
Bring a friend!

Music Fest at St. Mary's this Saturday!
Everyone is invited to come to the C.A.M.P.S. (Contemporary ARTS Mission Project Series) Music Fest this Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. at St. Mary's Parish Hall.  Join us for music, praise worship and lots of love.

Solstice

Solstice - Music Celebrating the Longest Day of the Year

There will be a special summer concert next Wednesday, June 20th at 7 p.m. in Taliaferro Hall. De Profundis (featuring Joe Yorio on saxophones, Bob Moore on piano and Tony Steve on percussion) present Solstice, a concert celebrating the day each year that sun stands still. The concert begins with traditional music - chant, hymn, spiritual - and takes it to a new place. Familiar tunes are graced with surprising rhythms and harmonies. Solstice is a uniquely musical and spiritual experience, as both the ear and the heart are satisfied. Those attending are encouraged to bring a donation of food items appropriate for the support of St. Mary's food pantry.

Get trained to use defibrillators

Have you noticed we have two Automated External Defibrillators (thanks to a generous benefactor) at the cathedral? An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat them through defibrillation, before the rescue crew arrives. We are offering training of the use of these SIMPLE devices for anyone who is interested in learning how to use them. You DO NOT have to be a medical professional to operate these EXTREMELY user friendly devices. The 15 minute training will be offered on the following dates: Wednesday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m., and Sundays, July 1 and July 8 at noon. Location: Ingram Lounge. Please be prompt as we will start right on time. You never know when you might be in the right place at the right time to save a life. That's worth 15 minutes of your time.
