Contemplative Prayer: A Way of Recovery

Join us for an hour on the second Saturday morning of each month in Cummings Chapel at 9:30 a.m. to practice contemplative prayer as a means to transformation. There will be a welcome and introduction to the hour, then time for silent prayer of the heart and meditation. This will be followed by conversation.

If you are not familiar with the practice, come and hear about it. Come back if it is a fit for where you are on your path on the journey.

Automated External Defibrillators

Have you noticed we have two Automated External Defibrillators (thanks to a generous benefactor) at the cathedral? An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat them through defibrillation, before the rescue crew arrives. We are offering training of the use of these SIMPLE devices for anyone who is interested in learning how to use them. You DO NOT have to be a medical professional to operate these EXTREMELY user friendly devices. The 15 minute training will be offered on the following dates: Wednesday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m., and Sundays, July 1 and July 8 at noon. Location: Ingram Lounge. Please be prompt as we will start right on time. You never know when you might be in the right place at the right time to save a life. That's worth 15 minutes of your time.

Cursillo Ultreya June 24th

On Sunday June 24th, there will be an Ultreya service in the Cathedral at 5 p.m., followed by a covered dish dinner at 6 p.m. All are welcome to come, whether you have ever been to Cursillo or not.

Looking for a Summer Camp?  Check out Camp Weed!

Camp Weed offers some wonderful Summer Camp opportunities for youth from 3rd to 12th grades.  The summer schedule is divided up by weeklong sessions named after saints. Each session is specifically designed to host certain age groups. These sessions have different themes and age appropriate talks and activities. The 2012 Summer Schedule can be found on the Camp Weed homepage at www.campweed.org.  Campers may enjoy volleyball, swimming, archery, arts and crafts, nature trail walking and much more.  Going to camp is a beautiful experience that can squeeze a year's worth of Christian formation into a fun filled week in the woods.  The memories and bonds that are formed while attending a week at Camp Weed will truly last a lifetime.  You must register at least a week in advance before the session you sign up for begins, so reserve a space for your child now!  Contact Camp Weed for camper requirements and more information.  See what Aaron Mayeski says about summer camp here.

                 Parish nurse

We've created a page on our Web site to highlight the work of our parish nurses. Each month, Tom and Sheila Burrell write a column for the page to promote good health. This month, they write about How to Keep Your Brain Sharp. Enjoy!

Getting Ready for Pilgrimage!

Aaron Mayeski
Aaron Mayeski,
Youth Minister

Greetings,

San Francisco or bust! St. John's Youth Pilgrimage 2012 is headed to the city by the bay for a fun filled and spiritually engaging journey from June 16th-23rd. I and youth leaders Tom Holcomb and Liesl Gavronsky will be leading 8 students on this fantastic trip. The 2012 pilgrims will include: Danilo Villavicencio, Ryan Cox, Emily Frisbie, Maia Cochran, Amber Adderley, Taylor Bliss, Bailey Cronin, and Kayla Little.

During our trip we will be visiting some of the wonderful historic and scenic destinations San Francisco has to offer such as: Fort Mason, Ghirardelli Square, Muir Woods, Union Square, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 33, Alcatraz, The Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, and Height-Ashbury. We will be staying at a super cool (and safe) Hostel located at historic Fort Mason. We will have a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island from where we are staying.

Hostel
The hostel where we will be staying

The purpose of this trip however is not a sightseeing tour. A pilgrimage is a spiritual journey, one that will help our pilgrims explore, understand, and nurture their spiritual life as newly confirmed Episcopalians. We will be having devotional and prayer time every morning and evening including Compline, and readings from the Lectionary and Daily Office. Each pilgrim will have time to pray, read, meditate and journal in the scenic and serene surroundings.

The spiritual destinations on our journey will include Sunday Eucharist at St. Gregory of Nyssa on the 17th, as well as Morning Prayer there on Wednesday the 20th, 12:10 p.m. Eucharist at Grace Cathedral on the 19th, and helping out at both St. Gregory's and Grace's VBS program called "Friends of God" on the 20th. We will tour both beautiful parishes and getting to know their youth and children's ministers. We will also visit the Community of St. Francis, a female religious order dedicated to serving their local community in the example of St. Francis of Assisi. We will join them for fellowship, dinner, and evening prayer on the 18th. There will be a Pilgrimage 2012 blog that can be followed here. The blog will be updated daily while we are in San Francisco.

This trip was funded by the wonderful Cathedral Delights dinners. Those dinners were hosted graciously by members of our parish and worked by the 2012 pilgrims. Without this amazing fundraiser our pilgrimage trip would not be possible. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this pilgrimage journey happen.

The 2012 pilgrims and leaders will be blessed this Sunday during the announcements at the 10:30 a.m. service here at the cathedral. Please pray for us as we embark on this amazing journey.

Blessings,

Aaron Mayeski

St. John's is going green - a little

You may have noticed that our Sunday bulletins are now smaller in size. Because we are encouraging our parishioners to use the prayer books in the pews, we are using
a smaller paper size, which will mean less paper usage
in the long run.
Also, we're not going to print as many copies of our bulletin announcements this week since almost all the material is available in the e-Eagle. You can download a copy of the bulletin here, or pick up a copy Sunday at the back of the church if you'd like to take one home.

Men's Breakfast and Bible Study, Saturday 16th
We will meet at the Cathedral on Saturday, June 16, at
8 a.m. for breakfast, worship, and Bible study. Please bring your Bible, and read all of Colossians and Philemon before Saturday the 16th. Find something from these letters that you would like to discuss with the group, and be prepared to articulate why it is of particular interest to you.
Bring a friend!

New Wednesday Classes in the Summer

We will not have our Wednesday dinners during the summer; those will resume in the fall. We will, however, have three Christian Formation offerings for adults during the summer, all on Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m., beginning June 6th:

  •  Basic Anglicanism, June 6 - July 25. Dean Kate presents a new session of "Basic A," an introduction to the core beliefs and practices of Anglicanism. Open to newcomers and longtime Episcopalians. Room 305
  •  "Gospel in Life: Grace Changes Everything," June 6 - July 25. Theresa Johnson will present
this series created by Timothy Keller featuring readings, DVD clips and discussion of what it means to do God's work in the city.
    Room 304

Gospel in Life

  •  "Living Your Strengths," June 6 - June 27. Dianne Larson and Caren Coleman lead a course on the bestselling book, "Living Your Strengths." Participants will take an online inventory to determine their five key strengths, and then discuss how to employ those strengths in ministry. Ingram Lounge

Trinity

Windows to Heaven

Come experience the joy of icon writing.  This ancient art form is available to you from June 18 to the 22nd from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The workshop will take you from a plain white board to a finished icon with gold leaf.  Icon means "image" and tells a story with paint and brush rather than pen and ink.  These "windows to heaven" are created in a prayerful, quiet atmosphere with Gregorian chant playing.  No artistic experience is necessary, only an openness to God working through you to create this form of prayer.  We will work on "The Trinity" icon by Rublov. The cost is $200.00 and includes all supplies.  Call Ann Brodt at 221-5638 for more information or to sign up.

Solstice

Solstice - Music Celebrating the Longest Day of the Year

There will be a special summer concert on June 20th at
7 p.m. in Taliaferro Hall.
De Profundis (featuring Joe Yorio on saxophones, Bob Moore on piano and Tony Steve on percussion) present Solstice, a concert celebrating the day each year that sun stands still. The concert begins with traditional music - chant, hymn, spiritual - and takes it to a new place. Familiar tunes are graced with surprising rhythms and harmonies. Solstice is a uniquely musical and spiritual experience, as both the ear and the heart are satisfied. Those attending are encouraged to bring a donation of food items appropriate for the support of St. Mary's food pantry.

Leadership Breakfast, June 28th:
Taking care of our youngest citizens
Our next Leadership breakfast will be on Thursday, June 28th, at 7:30 a.m. We will be discussing Children: 1,2, 3, the latest report from Jacksonville Community Council Inc (JCCI). Our guest panel will include Jill Dame, Interim CEO of the Jacksonville Children's Commission, Susan Main, Executive Director of the Early Learning Coalition of Duval, Geoff Selhorst, owner and administrator of A Child's Place Montessori Schools, Chris Lester, author and lead trainer of the Newborn TOUCH program at Baptist Health. Our 30th Birthday Party on April 19 was a huge success, thanks to the support and generosity of so many of our loyal supporters, including St. John's Cathedral. Through sponsorships and ticket sales, and thanks to generous in-kind donations, the event raised over $100,000 for DESC's mission of proclaiming the love of Jesus Christ by providing for the basic needs of those in emergency situations.

We invite you to enjoy photos from the event on our website here.
