A Tale for Easter: The Life of Joseph Foreshadows the Story of Jesus
By Theresa Johnson, Cathedral Executive
 | | The Reverend Neely Towe |
The Rev. Neely Towe is leading a dynamic Dean's Forum on the life of Joseph, a perfect topic for this Easter season. As Neely explains, Joseph's story begins with sin and moves to redemption and ultimately forgiveness. It is a great human drama; a tale of God's salvation and a foreshadowing of the Easter story of Jesus.
Last Sunday, we discussed how dysfunctional Joseph's family was, beginning with his father, Jacob, who showered love and a kingly robe on his favorite son, creating great bitterness amongst Joseph's brothers. Joseph didn't help matters by flaunting dreams he was having in which his brothers, as well as the sun, moon and stars, bowed down to pay homage to him. What arrogance!
Neely brings all this drama to life with humor, great understanding of biblical history and wise perspective on the universality of the narrative.
We are familiar with how Joseph's brothers plotted to kill him and ultimately sold him into slavery. They then broke their father's heart by tricking him into thinking his beloved Joseph had been killed by wild animals. Yet the truth was that Joseph became a servant in Potiphar's house, and this Sunday we will focus on the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife, who tried to seduce him and then falsely accused him of attempted rape. We'll read of Joseph's imprisonment, God's continued faithfulness and how Joseph accurately interpreted the colorful dreams of his fellow inmates, the cupbearer and the baker. One goes free. One meets a violent death. More great drama!
What is God trying to teach us here? Join us at 9 a.m. in Ingram Lounge each Sunday through May 20th* to find out. Neely Towe is a retired Congregational minister who teaches a popular Bible study at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She is a great teacher and we are blessed to have her with us during this Easter season.
*No Dean's Forum or other Christian Formation classes will be held on May 6, because of the parish retreat at Camp Weed.
