There will be a welcome and introduction to the hour, then time for silent prayer of the heart and meditation. This will be followed by conversation.

Parents of Children in Godly Play at St. John's Cathedral

Godly Play classes for 3 year olds to third grade begin at 10:15 a.m. and end promptly at 11:15 a.m. To ensure that your child is properly attended at all times, please pick up your child directly from their classroom. Any children not picked up by 11:20 a.m. will be taken to the nursery. Please let teachers know if it is OK for another adult (please provide name) or older sibling of your child to pick them up. If you are attending the 10:30 a.m. service, let us know so that a teacher can walk your child to church and find where you are sitting.

Greetings!

Dean Kate Moorehead

The Easter season lasts for fifty days. I encourage you to find ways to give thanks during these fifty days. Eat something wonderful, take deep breaths, and drink in some education about God and the wonder of creation.

A gift is coming to us this Easter season. N.T. Wright, the retired Bishop of Durham, now a professor and a prolific writer, will be coming to preach at the Cathedral on Sunday, May 6th, and to speak at 5 p.m. that evening as well. He will present a lecture and sign books at a reception after his talk. Some call him the C.S. Lewis of our day. (For some of his great writings go to www.ntwrightonline.com). Bishop Wright has also recently published a new book called "How God Became King," which is available in our bookstore. He will also be at St. Mark's on Saturday, May 5th. Please do all that you can to find a way to hear his wisdom!

Also during the Easter season, we are offering some incredible, new courses here at the Cathedral. On Sunday mornings, The Rev. Neely Towe will bless us with a course on Joseph at 9 a.m. Also at 9 a.m., Judge Tjoflat and Marcia Tjoflat will continue to teach a course on "The Parables of Jesus." At 10:15 a.m., we will offer a new Basic A class for those who want to learn more about the Episcopal Church but cannot attend the class on Wednesday nights. This course will prepare you for confirmation at the end of May. A mother's support group and a centering prayer class are also offered at 10:15 a.m.. Sunday School for all ages continues as usual.

On Wednesday nights in Easter, we will be offering a new class called "The Awe and Wonder of Creation," taught by myself, Father Perry and Dr. Jim Dobson, Professor Emeritus of Physiology at U Mass and a new member here at the Cathedral. We also offer a parenting support group and a course on George Herbert, the great Anglican poet, led by Professor Jay Wright. As always, I will continue to teach the Basic Anglicanism course.

This church is full of opportunities to learn about God and the Resurrection life. Join us.

In Christ's love,

Kate+

Organ and Brass Recital

The Ancient City Brass Band, along with Cathedral Organist Tim Tuller, will appear in concert at St. John's Cathedral at 5 p.m. next Sunday, April 22.  The band is a volunteer ensemble composed of students, amateurs, and professionals and is conducted by our own St. John's parishioner Bill McNeiland. The concert will feature selections in the British Brass Band tradition by Ralph Vaughn-Williams and Gustav Holst.  Also appearing with the Ancient City Brass Band will be Bass Soloist Wayne Bailey, who will perform "How Great Thou Art."  No concert of British music would be complete without several marches. The audience will also be asked to "whistle along" as the band performs "Colonel Bogey" (theme to the Bridge on the River Kwai).

Mercedes Trapp
Leadership Breakfast this Tuesday, April 17  - PLEASE RSVP NOW

Our next Jacksonville Leadership Breakfast will be Tuesday, April 17, from 7:30-9 a.m. at St. John's Cathedral. We are very excited to present representatives of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and Duval County Public Schools to talk about the ONE by ONE project, aimed at mobilizing the community to improve our public schools. Panelists will include Pam Paul, Vice President of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund; Rachael Tutwiler, Community Engagement Manager, Jacksonville Public Education Fund; Cheryl Riddick, Director of Community and Family Engagement for the Duval County Public Schools and Zak Champagne, 2010 Teacher of the Year.

Also joining us will be Mercedes Trapp, shown above, one of the students featured in an innovative photo exhibit, "One in Three," highlighting local students who have been at risk of dropping out. One in three students in our public schools do not graduate on time or at all - and points to the role everyone in our community can play in ensuring that all of our students graduate ready for college and the workforce. The breakfast is free and open to the public, thanks to support from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. Please RSVP to Theresa Johnson, tjohnson@jaxcathedral.org.
