 | | What is the meaning of the Easter season? |
Greetings!
Hippolytus was a Roman bishop who lived from 170-235 A.D. He wrote many liturgical documents, recording how the early Christians worshipped in the first and second centuries. He describes an ancient service called The Easter Vigil.
At the vigil, those who were preparing to be baptized would wear robes of white. For the 40 days of Lent, they fasted and prayed to prepare for their baptisms. On the night before Easter, the vigil would begin in the dark. A fire would be kindled, reminding the worshippers that the light came into the darkness just as God created the world out of nothing. Then, by the light of candles lit from this kindled fire, the Christians would read from the Hebrew Scriptures all night.
They would read how God created humanity but we fell from God's grace, about how the people waited for a Messiah, and the prophets foretold that one would come. All night they read the great stories of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Then, just when the sun began to rise, the people would shout Alleluia and baptize the new Christians. Thus, Easter Day began.
Two thousand years later, we do not read all night, but we do gather in the dark of Easter morning, kindle a fire and read from the Old Testament, and when the sun rises this year, we at St. John's Cathedral will baptize three adults and two babies.
I invite you to worship with us on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and on Easter Sunday. And, for those of you who want to see how the early Christians worshipped, join me at 6 a.m for the Great Vigil of Easter.
May God bless you.
In Christ's love,
Kate+

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Tomorrow, Good Friday, Apr. 6
Walk the labyrinth in Taliaferro Hall 8-6 p.m. on Good Friday.
ALL CHILDREN ARE INVITED: On Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the cathedral, we invite children and their families to walk with Jesus as he makes his way, step by step, to the cross. To begin, we will meet in the cathedral for song and prayer. That will be followed by a walk to visit each of 14 stations telling the story of Jesus's last day. At each stop, children will receive a symbol reminding them of each particular stop as Jesus walked to Golgotha. Afterward, we go to the courtyard for a final activity where children will match the symbols they have collected with images of Jesus on display. Invite your friends and bring your neighborhood, or just yourselves! This will be meaningful and memorable. Linda Martin has carefully researched and developed materials and curriculum for a children's version of the Stations of the Cross. A huge thank you to Linda for her tireless effort in developing this special service for our children.
GOOD FRIDAY LITURGY, Noon to 3 p.m.
This three-hour service includes scripture, prayer, homily, music and silence on each of the 14 stations. Come and go as you are able.
5:30 p.m. - Stations of the Cross - Cathedral We walk the stations together as we pray and read scripture. (30 minutes)
7 p.m. - Stations of the Cross: A Service of Music (Le Chemin de la Croix) by Marcel Dupré - Cathedral Mark the last steps of Jesus to the cross with readings and music played by Timothy Tuller on the Cathedral's organ.

Keeping the '1 in 3' from dropping out
Our next Jacksonville Leadership Breakfast will be Tuesday, April 17, from 7:30-9 a.m. at St. John's Cathedral. We are very excited to present representatives of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and Duval County Public Schools to talk about the ONE by ONE project, aimed at mobilizing the community to improve our public schools. Also joining us will be Mercedes Trapp, shown above, one of the students featured in an innovative photo exhibit, "One in Three," highlighting local students who have been at risk of dropping out. One in three students in our public schools do not graduate on time or at all - and points to the role everyone in our community can play in ensuring that all of our students graduate ready for college and the workforce. The breakfast is free and open to the public, thanks to support from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. Please RSVP to Theresa Johnson, tjohnson@jaxcathedral.org.
