Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Walking the Mourner's Path: On Oct. 20-22, St. John's Cathedral will offer training for facilitators in the nationally recognized program, "Walking the Mourners Path." This is a Christ-centered grief support program that focuses on transforming participants' lives from grief to joyful living. Trained persons become "grief recovery ministers" for their church. A program for participants will be scheduled in the fall following the completion of this facilitator training program. Registration forms are available by contacting Catherine Gilbert at 480-657-8503 or you may call Nancy Altman at 904-398-4135 for information. Cost of the training for new facilitators is $350. The fee is $250 if more than one person from a parish attends. Lunch will be provided each day. |
A Message from the Rev. Louise Hardman, Deacon/Director, Center for Prayer & Spirituality
The Center for Prayer & Spirituality sends out an almost-weekly email that includes a brief thought from sacred writings. It goes out to more than 300 folks, from South Africa, England, Okinawa and all across our country. Responses are positive, from people who welcome the spiritual lift. One wrote: "Your Almost Weekly eWord is blessing my spiritual journey here in Spokane. May you know that your faithfulness and birthing has and is touching my heart and life. Your God-breathed message is giving me new life." Another wrote, "Thanks so much!! I heard via an e-mail forwarded to a friend, who forwarded it to me on the gift of silence. (9/4/2010) I just came off of a 14-day retreat and it meant so very much. Blessings to you..." A clergy spouse shared one week's offering with her husband, who used it in his sermon that week. People stop me in the grocery store, garden shop and other places to ask if their name could be added to the distribution. They had heard about it from friends. If you'd like to receive the Almost Weekly eWord, please send your name and email address to lhardman@jaxcathedral.org.

Youth group serves the needy in Daytona
Greetings!
Last week, the St. John's Youth Group spent several days in Daytona Beach, but we weren't playing volleyball on the sand. We were doing service work through a partnership with YouthWorks. "Be like Jesus" is YouthWorks' motto and the organization's purpose is to help the church be the church by providing life-changing, Christ-centered resources for ministry.
We took part in one of YouthWorks short term mission's trips last week. "Be Different" was the theme, and I believe we were definitely being different by giving up time with our friends and family over the July Fourth holiday to work with the poor, handicapped, needy and elderly of Daytona Beach. Five of us; Andrew Iguina, Danilo Villavicencio, Amber Adderly, Maia Cochran and myself made the trip on July 3 to join 50 other students and leaders from Boston, Birmingham, and Statesboro, Ga. Our four YouthWorks leaders were from Minneapolis, Chicago and Los Angeles. We all stayed at a local Christian and Missionary Alliance church in Daytona. The week we spent was unforgettable.
Please see the news section of the St. John's Cathedral web page (www.jaxcathedral.org) to see more photos and learn more. If you are interested in the St. John's Cathedral Youth Ministries, contact Aaron Mayeski.
In Christ, Aaron

CHRISTMAS IN JULY CAN HELP PAY THE BILLS!
Each summer we try to come up with a catchy phrase so parishioners realize we are open for business all summer, even though school is out and you may be away on vacation. Episcopalians are notorious for taking the summer off! You may remember we used "We'll keep the lights on" and "Don't make us sell the silver" in the past. So this year it's "Christmas in July."
We are very conscious of expenses and our budget, but it is a struggle in the summer months. We're always "waiting" on Christmas. December is the time when many members pay their pledge. This summer we are asking everyone who pays their pledge in December to pay it in July. Our expenses are pretty equal every month and waiting on Christmas is heartburn for bookkeeping.
So this month, please think of Christmas. Your church family will be grateful!

LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED PASTORAL CARE, PRAYERS Because of recently enacted privacy laws, hospitals do not call the cathedral to let us know automatically if you are in the hospital. Please call the office and let us know so that our clergy can visit you, bring flowers and pray for your swift recovery. Our prayer list is kept with Judy Maurer in the office and then included each week in this bulletin. Confidential prayers are passed on to the Daughters of the King through the pew cards. Let us know so that we can pray for and help you.
SAVE THE DATE/RALLY DAY: Rally Day is Aug. 28. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the many classes, volunteer opportunities and the outreach ministries offered at the cathedral.
