Walking the Mourner's Path: On Oct. 20-22, St. John's Cathedral will offer training for facilitators in the nationally recognized program, "Walking the Mourners Path." This is a Christ-centered grief support program that focuses on transforming participants' lives from grief to joyful living. Trained persons become "grief recovery ministers" for their church. A program for participants will be scheduled in the fall following the completion of this facilitator training program. Registration forms are available by contacting Catherine Gilbert at 480-657-8503 or you may call Nancy Altman at 904-398-4135 for information. Cost of the training for new facilitators is $350. The fee is $250 if more than one person from a parish attends.  Lunch will be provided each day.

Art classes at Sulzbacher offer homeless residents a creative outlet
Are you inspired to help with art classes at the Sulzbacher Center for the homeless?

Greetings!

For the past year, Edie Moore-Hubert and Carolyn Snyder-Menke have been running art and music classes at the Sulzbacher Center under the auspices of St. John's Cathedral. The classes meet on the last Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. Edie welcomes volunteers to help and contributions to pay for supplies. (Make checks payable to St. John's Cathedral and write "Sulzbacher Arts" in the subject line.) Here is a report from Edie about this remarkable ministry:

It seems something wonderful happens each month. In November and December, we made Christmas cards. One young man said he didn't have anyone to give a card to, and didn't think he would make one. Carolyn suggested he make a card for himself, with a message of encouragement, etc. This idea engaged him, and he spent the rest of the class making a very creative and beautiful card. At the end of the class, he gave the card to one of the other residents. She had him sign it, and was an artist herself, so had a great appreciation for what he had made. Read more

CHRISTMAS IN JULY CAN HELP PAY THE BILLS!
Christmas in JulyEach summer we try to come up with a catchy phrase so parishioners realize we are open for business all summer, even though school is out and you may be away on vacation.  Episcopalians are notorious for taking the summer off!  You may remember  we used "We'll keep the lights on" and "Don't make us sell the silver" in the past.  So this year it's
"Christmas in July."

We are very conscious of expenses and our budget, but it is a struggle in the summer months.  We're always "waiting" on Christmas.  December is the time when many members pay their pledge.  This summer we are asking everyone who pays their pledge in December to pay it in July.  Our expenses are pretty equal every month and waiting on Christmas is heartburn for bookkeeping.

So this month, please think of Christmas. Your church family will be grateful!

SUMMER WEDNESDAYS WITH DEAN KATE The Basic A class with Dean Kate begins at 5:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., Dean Kate is leading a book study of "Walking The Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses" by Bruce Feiler. Books are available for $15 in the cathedral bookstore.

INTERESTED IN SERVING AS AN ACOLYTE?

We will be holding a training for acolytes and chalice ministers this Sunday, July 10, at NOON in the cathedral. This training is open to all who are interested.

ENJOY 'BREAKFAST WITH HENRI NOUWEN'

Our traditional 9 a.m. summer breakfasts begin this Sunday-- a great way for those who attend the 8 and 10:30 services to meet and fellowship over a delicious meal. Each Sunday we will read a short passage by Henri Nouwen to discuss at our tables. Ministry groups are needed to prepare this Sunday meal time together-- contact the office to sign up. The suggested donation for breakfast is $4 for all ages. This week's breakfast will be provided by the Cathedral School board and staff.

LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED PASTORAL CARE, PRAYERS  Because of recently enacted privacy laws, hospitals do not call the cathedral to let us know automatically if you are in the hospital. Please call the office and let us know so that our clergy can visit you, bring flowers and pray for your swift recovery. Our prayer list is kept with Judy Maurer in the office and then included each week in this bulletin. Confidential prayers are passed on to the Daughters of the King through the pew cards. Let us know so that we can pray for and help you.

SAVE THE DATE/RALLY DAY: Rally Day is Aug. 28. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the many classes, volunteer opportunities and the outreach ministries offered at the cathedral.

Family Promise childrenFamily Promise Week is coming up! We need volunteers

to help with this important - and enjoyable - project.

St. John's Cathedral will be a "host church" for the Family Promise program July 24-31. We need folks to sign up to stay at church one night or more, and others who can provide a meal, snacks, toiletries, linens and other items. If you can help, please take time to fill out this questionnaire. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Contemplative Prayer: A Way to Recovery

Hosted by Dianne Larson and Tim Lynch

and the Center for Prayer & Spirituality

We are powerless and through prayer and meditation, we come closer to our Higher Power.

Join us for an hour on Saturday mornings to practice contemplative prayer as a means to transformation. There will be a welcome and introduction to the hour, then time for silent prayer of the heart and meditation. This will be followed by conversation.

If you are not familiar with the practice, come and hear about it. Come back if it is a fit for where you are on your path on the journey.
