WEAR RED THIS SUNDAY

Collect

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Greetings!
Kate Moorehead
The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead, Dean

This Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service, 19 people will become full members in the Episcopal Church.  What this means is that they will take vows to commit themselves to this Cathedral and to the Anglican Communion across the world.  In order to seal this commitment, the Bishop will lay his hands on them and say a prayer for them. Why does the Bishop lay his hands on them?  The reason he touches them is very ancient.  It is called the Apostolic Succession.

Have you ever played the game of trust?  I first played this game in a youth group in junior high.  What you do is to close your eyes and take the hands of a person in front of you and someone behind you.  There is a leader, who has his or her eyes open.  The leader then leads this group of blind people all over the church, using words to describe what they will encounter.  All that the group has is the touch of the person in front and behind to guide them.  It is called trust because you cannot play the game without trusting the hand of the one who leads you.

It is believed that Jesus laid his hands on Peter when he told Peter that he was the Rock and upon this Rock, Jesus would build the church (Matthew 6).  Peter then laid his hands on some of the disciples, who laid their hands on others who laid their hands on others, and so on through generations of Christians until today.  Thus our Bishop is linked all the way to Jesus through touch, through the laying on of hands.  When the Bishop touches you, it is as close as we can get to Jesus touching you.

This is the beauty of our ancient tradition, a tradition that reaches all the way back two thousand years.  We celebrate our connection to Jesus today.  All we have to do is trust.

In Christ's love,

Kate +

SUNDAY IS PENTECOST!  Remember to wear red as we celebrate the birth of the church. At our Sunday services,  we will hear the Pentecost lesson from Acts in several languages (during the 9 and 10:30 a.m. services). Thank you to our multilingual readers for participating in the service.

SUNDAY WE CELEBRATE WITH BIRTHDAY CAKES! WHITSUNDAY is a name we don't use as often as Pentecost. It is the 50 days after Easter and coincides with the Jewish festival Shavuot. It celebrated the first fruits of the harvest. This Sunday, we celebrate the birth of the Church. The origin of the name is uncertain but may have been White Sunday as this was a traditional time of baptism and white is the color of the robes worn by the newly baptized. Join us in Taliaferro Hall this Sunday after the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services for a piece of cake, celebrate our faith and welcome our newly baptized and confirmed members of St. John's Cathedral. (And thank you in advance to all our wonderful Pentecost Birthday Cake chefs: Mary Jane Williamson, Missy Holcomb, Courtney Gilbreath, Pat Clance, Arversia Campbell, Eileen Villavicencio, Sharon Millan, Lynn Kuhlman, Donna Perry, Jenell Flynn, Kathie Meuselbach, Judith Halpin, Jan Roache, Deb Dixon, Selecia Jones, Tim Lynch, Rolland Kohls, Megan Cochran, Rebecca Black and Stacey Lowery. YUMMY!

EFM, Education For Ministry, has made a world of difference for so many people at the Cathedral, in the diocese, and the world wide Anglican community.  Here at the Cathedral we have two ongoing groups, one taught by Jay Wright and the other by Joe and Laura O'Shields, that gather to read the Bible, learn about the history of the world wide churches and the Episcopal church as well as reflect theologically on our everyday experiences.  Contact Laura or Joe O'Shields at joeoshie@comcast.net, 904-399-5916.  We welcome visitors at this time and involvement with us for next fall.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FAMILY PROMISE WEEK
Could you spare a night or two one week this July to sleep at the Cathedral House to help homeless families? Or could you bring covered dish meals or breakfast items to the church to feed the same families during that week? St. John's Cathedral will be a "host church" for the Family Promise program July 24-31. We need volunteers who can give one night or more, or who would like to provide one meal or more. Family Promise helps people in economic crisis find jobs and permanent housing. In most cases, these are intact families who are not eligible to stay together at Sulzbacher or other shelters. During the day, the adults are either at job interviews, or at the Family Promise office working with job-placement counselors. The children ride to and from school in the Family Promise van. At the end of the day, Family Promise transports its clients to a host church where they stay for a week at a time. Volunteers at the host churches provide dinner and breakfast, and stay at church while the families are there. Contact Rolland Kohls at kohls26@hotmail.com if you are available to help with this important outreach.

SAVE THE DATE: Rally Day is Aug. 28. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the many classes, volunteer opportunities and the outreach ministries offered at the cathedral.
