Greetings!
 | | The Rev. J. Perry Smith |
Thanks and congratulations to those who participated in the recent Wednesday night book study of Joan Chittister'sbook, The Gift of Years, Growing Older Gracefully. Her book was an easy read chock full of insight and wisdom that either validated or contradicted our own experiences with aging. Her observations provoked lively and stimulating discussion among the class - a not-so-shy group of very bright and accomplished people.
Chittister also provided a good measure of practical ways to ease some of the pain and misunderstandings of aging. Some of her key observations are worth remembering: ► "What did I really think my existence was all about if not about coming to the end of this life, and coming to the beginning of another?" ► "Only the old can make age a bright and vibrant place to be. And so we must. If we don't, we stand to waste a full twenty-five to thirty percent of our lives." ► "A blessing of these years is the ability to see that life does not have to be perfect to be perfect; it only needs to be forgiving----and forgiven." Chittister, a Benedictine nun who is now 70, wonders if she was not too young to write this particular book. A dear friend of mine who is 92, after reading the book in parallel with our group, told me that Chittister is indeed still young and has a lot to learn about aging. Perspective is important. Yet, I think Chittister concludes The Gift of Years with extraordinary insight and understanding. She writes in her last chapter The Twilight Time: ► "It's now time to surrender to acceptance... This is the time for melting into God... The veil between us and eternity will begin to tear and we will slow walk through it, ready, open, thrown upon the heart of God... Now the Mystery is about to reveal itself. Now the time is complete. Now it is finished. Now it is only beginning." The Gift of Years generated so much interest that another group study will begin in late June at the Cathedral Townhouses for the residents. Non-residents may attend. An anonymous gift to pay for the books for the participants has been given and I will facilitate the discussion. Dates and time will be announced soon. All God's blessings, Fr. Perry Smith
