Greetings!
 | | The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead |
God willing, we will be opening a newly renovated Cummings Chapel on the first Sunday of Lent, March 12, in just over one week. Let me explain what Cummings will look like and why. Since ancient times, Christian worship spaces have been decorated beautifully in neutral color tones. The seasons of the church calendar change through the course of the year and along with those seasons, the colors also change. We move from purple and blue to white, green and red. The sanctuary provides the palatte on which these seasonal colors can change, expressing the mood of the season as different aspects of Jesus' life and ministry are emphasized. For this reason, Cummings Chapel will be neutral tones of gold, beige, blue and white. Most ancient cathedrals have pew chairs rather than solid wood pews. These chairs can be joined together to form a pew or they can be separated to create a more versatile space for smaller worship, workshops, dancing, children's chapel and classes. Thus we will have pew chairs and not pews in Cummings. We will use the older red chairs from the big sanctuary for a month or so while we live with the new colors on the walls and carpet. In about a month or so, new chairs will be ordered with upholstery to match the room. And although many would prefer a wood floor in Cummings, the Property Committee has recommended that we stick with carpet for at least one year while we make sure that there is no longer even a hint of water leakage. The roof and gutters have been replaced and all water issues seem to be solved before we would install a wood floor. Time is the best judge of that. I want to thank Robert Hyde, who has worked tirelessly to bring in experts, convene committees and bear all of our opinions. Thanks also to the Property Committee and to Cordelia Smithwick, interior designer at the Cummer Museum, who generously gave of her time and expertise. I thank God for our newly rennovated chapel! In Christ's love, Kate+
