Sunday Collect
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Therefore, let us be concerned for our children and for ourselves as well, as we educate ourselves and them, let us beg God to help us in our task. If God sees that we care about this, God will help us. If we are unconcerned, God will not give us his hand." St. Chrysostom

Greetings!

Lorna Williams
The Rev. Lorna Williams
The above quote comes from St.Chrysostom, also known as "Golden Mouth" for his outstanding preaching during the 5th century. Back then and through today many congregations have placed great importance on the Christian formation of young people. We here at St. John's follow in that great tradition of the spiritual nurture of our children and teenagers.

I am so pleased to join the cathedral as the Canon for Youth & Christian Formation, also known as the Youth Priest. Ministering with children and teenagers has been my lifelong work, before and during my 12 years of ordained ministry. I have been privileged to teach children how to pray, remind youth of the loving presence of God and bring babies into the community of Christ through baptism. Read more.

Donate Christmas cards for inmates to send
It's that time again! The Commission on Prison and Related Ministry is gathering new Christian Christmas cards for inmates at our 32 prisons; 28 jails and youth facilities. The inmates use and look forward to having Christmas cards to send. This has become a very effective ministry in our Diocese. Please participate. You may start donating cards now through December 3, 2010. Please note: cards and envelopes cannot contain foil and we ask that cards contain a Christian message - no santas, snowmen, etc.

'Adopt a grandparent' at Gerontology Center
We are beginning a new ministry called "Adopt-a-Grandparent" where we will partner parishioners with elders at the Cathedral Gerontology Center. Individuals or whole families can participate. Think how much you could brighten a senior's day if you could visit for just an hour a week, perhaps after church each Sunday. Want to learn more? Contact David Dufresne at 744-7443 or davidstwo@aol.com.

Thanksgiving flowersThanksgiving Day flower donations are being accepted now through Nov. 21.  Flowers, fruits and vegetables are used by our Sanctuary Guild to adorn the high altar and sanctuary for the Thanksgiving Day service on Nov. 25.  Please place your donation in the envelopes provided in the pews.  All thanksgivings/memorials received by Nov. 21 will be printed in the Thanksgiving Day and Nov. 28 bulletins. Our Thanksgiving Day Eucharist will be at 10:30 a.m.

Call for nominations to Vestry and Diocesan Convention

Hospitality Opportunities

Our Coffee Hour Angels have been wonderful this fall. Thanks to all for sharing great nibbles with the parish family during fellowship time. We have a few slots open between now and the end of the year so gather a small team and please stop by the coffee hour sign up easel!  Many thanks to our lead angel, Jenell Flynn, for maintaining this ministry (and for hosting coffee hour last week!) Upcoming events include:

St. Andrew's Day Reception, Nov.  21. We need finger sandwiches, cookies, fruit, cheese & crackers, etc. If you can't come to the service, you can drop off a platter of goodies in the kitchen that morning.

Ordination Reception, Dec. 5: Our own Beth Tjoflat will be ordained a transitional deacon and the St. John's family will provide reception food along with the two other churches who are sponsoring an ordinand.

For more food suggestions and to assist with any or all of these opportunities, stop by the easels in Taliaferro Hall or email Monica MacKenzie, to tell her what you will bring!

St. Mary's Bag-a-Month Club requests toys and gifts for our friends in Springfield. Note the paper on the bag has a list of suggested items on the back. Please bring in your unwrapped gifts before the end November. Thank you for making Christmas wonderful for those less fortunate.

Lindsey Tuller will present a recital this Sunday, Nov.14, at 3 p.m. in Taliaferro Hall. Tim Tuller will accompany on piano. Guests artists will include Ellen Olsen, viola, and Collin Patierno on Spanish guitar.

Please note: Our designated smoking area is Cathedrsignal Park, facing Church Street. Please refrain from smoking in other areas in and around the cathedral. Thank you!
