Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Wisdom from the Very Rev. Mike Kinman
Fr. Kinman, Provost at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, will be our guest preacher at both services this Sunday.
 | | The Very Rev. Mike Kinman |
A few weeks back, I was sitting at the reredos of Christ Church Cathedral here in St. Louis, praying Morning Prayer. I was feeling stressed and stretched thin, like there was way too much to do and way too little of me to go around. And I was reading the Gospel for the morning, more going through the motions than actually attending to it ... when this one passage from Mark 38 just jumped off the page.
"For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it."
Have you ever had words grab you by the collar and shake you? Have you ever had a thought that was like a jolt of electricity coursing through you? That's what this was. I read those words and looked up at the cross and heard the words as clear as if someone was speaking them in my ear.
It's not YOUR life.

St. John's to host Leadership Breakfast Nov. 2
 | | Tony Boselli |
Tony Boselli, whose non-profit organization is doing great work on behalf of at-risk children, will be a featured speaker at our first "Jacksonville Leadership Breakfast" on Nov. 2 at 7:30 a.m. in Taliaferro Hall. The former Jacksonville Jaguar and founder of the Boselli Foundation (and son of St. John's Vestry member Candy Hodgson!) will join Linda Lanier of the Jacksonville Children's Commission to talk about "What's Best for the Children," a discussion of inspiring work, best practices and hurdles jumped to give kids a better future. We are inviting leaders from throughout the community to attend this event, the first of four quarterly forums we will hold in the year ahead. The series is funded by a grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Foundation. The breakfast is free, but space is limited. If you would like to attend, please email Theresa Johnson right away. Ginny Myrick is organizing this event with help from Margaret Purcell, and Janet Owen, associate general counsel at UNF, will serve as moderator. | | Janet Lee Bliss, center, did a beautiful job organizing our Blessing of the Animals last Sunday. Click the photo to see more photos on our Web site. |
Our Blessing of the Animals last Sunday was a wonderful event. We especially thank K and C Pet Rescue for bringing Barkley and Bentley, adorable, adoptable black lab puppies, to share in the fun and be blessed. They are still in need of loving homes. Can you help? In addition to the photos on the St. John's Web site, Michael Miller posted a lot of great pictures from the St. Francis Day service on Facebook, and Hayley Zeller posted excellent photos on FlickR.

Cathedral offers workshop on dreams
The Center for Prayer and Spirituality is offering a class that will (a) look at some of the dreams from the Bible and see how they were so influential in the lives of the Israelites, (b) consider some materials on dreams from John Sanford, Morton Kelsey, and others in the Christian tradition, (c) look at some of the thinking of Carl Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz regarding the nature and significance of dreams, and (d) explore some of the ways that we can attend to our own dreams and see what messages God might be trying to give us in the middle of the night. The class begins next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., led by Victoria and Robert Freeman. Read more about this workshop. Hear the Edward Waters College choir
