Turn Lemons into Management Lessons!

It was the first day of summer and 7 year-old Jacob's entrepreneurial instincts kicked into full gear:

"We HAVE to have a lemonade stand!" he declared.

And so, Jacob was charged with setting up the table with cups, napkins and a money jar, while I was charged with dumping two containers of Crystal Light into a pitcher of water and ice.

The sign read: "Artificially Sweetened Lemonade Sold By a Naturally Good Kid - 25 cents" and Jacob was ready to open shop.

Sweaty neighbors, landscapers, and joggers came in droves -- most people giving Jacob a dollar and telling him to keep the change. Jacob poured the cups, took the money -- and even gave one mom buying a drink for her a toddler a gentle (if judgemental) reminder about the artificial sweetener!

Then, a neighborhood kid came by and asked Jacob if she could run the stand with him. Eager to please and hungry for peer conversation, Jacob said, "of course!"

While the girl sampled our product, I called Jacob aside and out of earshot. "Jacob," I said quietly. "Let me hold the money you have made so far because that all belongs to you. And then you two can split the money you make running the stand while you are together."

Jacob, as usual, already had it all figured out.

"Mom," he whispered, shaking his head at my lack of creativity. "I'm going to ask her to be a volunteer!"

And so, the new position of "Lemonade Chair" was created.
