KEY Screenings

Kidneys: Evaluate Yours 2011

With the help of numerous dedicated and generous volunteers, NKF-MD was able to go into many communities of its service area, bringing a message of kidney health awareness and providing a free screening for the early warning signs of kidney disease.Community doctors, nurses and volunteers helped us screen 568 people from Easton to Frederick and Annapolis to Essex, in addition to several KEYs in the high risk area of Baltimore City. Of the 568 people screened in 2011, 145 had "significant results".Significant results (uncontrolled high blood pressure and glucose levels, for ex.) translate into a higher risk of kidney damage which should be followed up with the participant's personal doctor.NKF-MD's goal for 2012 is to have many more KEY screenings in areas we haven't yet visited. Please keep your eye out for the 2012 schedule on our website shortly after the new year.

Beyond Dialysis

Thanks to our incredibly generous Sponsors (DaVita,Inc.; Fresenius Medical Care; Genentech; University of Maryland Medical Center, Division of Transplantation; Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center; Genzyme) and Vendors (Northern Pharmacy; NxStage; American Access Care) we were able to again offer three Beyond Dialysis Events for the patients in Baltimore (Martins West), Hagerstown (Hagerstown Hotel and Conference Center) and  Milford, DE (at Milford Senior Center) over three consecutive Sundays in October. The luncheon events provided a free afternoon of food, education, inspiration and sharing for the patients and their guests. It was an opportunity for patients to separate themselves from their daily struggles with dialysis and have a chance to relax and re-energize. This year's three events gave almost 850 people a valued chance for inspiration through compelling speakers and relaxation. We have been hearing comments of appreciation from the participants and social workers and know that this effort has affected many lives for the better!

21st Annual Invitational Golf Tournament

GOLF FOURSOME (WIN)

We held our 21st annual golf tournament, the Liberty Mutual Invitational, on Tuesday, September 13th at Bulle Rock in Havre de Grace, MD. The weather cooperated and our participants and volunteers seemed to enjoy the event. Many thanks to our generous sponsors: Boston Financial Data Services, Broadridge, DST Output, DST Systems, Havana Club, The J M. Smucker Company, Presidio, State Street and Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. We cannot hold this event without the support of our volunteers and we are most appreciative of their time and energy, for without their help, this event would not be a success. Congratulations to the winning foursome of Noah W., Scott H., Scott K. and Jim W. who will travel to Pinehurst, NC in March 2012 to play in the National Finals.

3rd Annual Ballers Golf Tournament

The Department of Energy's 3rd annual Ballers Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Thursday, September 22nd at Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana, MD. This third-party event is held in memory of a former DOE co-worker and the proceeds benefit the NKF-MD's growing programs and services provided to the community. Many thanks for their continuous generosity and support in raising $18,000 for the NKF-MD.

Western Maryland Kidney Ride a Success!

Thanks to all of the Riders in the 3rd annual Western Maryland Kidney Ride - Ride with Mountain Thunder held in Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland along the Great Allegany Trail to benefit NKF-MD. Over $15,000 was raised to support our mission. Details are being developed for an even bigger and better Ride in 2012. Pictured here are several of the riders getting ready to take off.

Kidney Ride 2011

It's time for the 2012 Kidney Walks!

TAKE A LIFE SAVING STEP!

The Kidney Walk is a fun, inspiring community fundraiser that calls attention to the prevention of kidney disease and the need for organ donation. It's also an opportunity for patients, family, friends and businesses to come together.

Everyone Can Walk! Our non-competitive Kidney Walks are open to all ages, so bring the family along. All you have to do is fundraise and walk.

Over 26 million Americans - that's 1 in 9 adults - have chronic kidney disease, and most are not aware of it. Because symptoms may not appear until the kidneys are actually failing, millions of people with kidney damage remain unaware and are not taking steps to protect the health of their kidneys.

Caramel Apple Cupcakes

3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced

1/4 cup caramel flavored syrup - sugar free
1 yellow cake mix, sugar free
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1/2 cup water

Microwave diced apples for five to six minutes, until they are soft.  Smash them with a potato masher and let cool to room temperature.  In a mixing bowl, add cake mix, apples, caramel flavored syrup, eggs, oil and water.  Mix on low for 1 minute and mix on medium-high for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl to make sure the batter is completely mixed.  Fill 24 cup cake liners with 2/3 fill of batter and bake at 325 F for 20 to 30 minutes.  Use a toothpick to stick in the middle to check for doneness. If the toothpick comes out clean, the cupcakes are done.

Frosting:

8 oz of Sugar Free Vanilla Frosting
2 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons of caramel flavored syrup, sugar free
4 1/2 oz Jellybeans
Beat frosting with caramel flavoring.  Frost cupcakes and sprinkle the tops with jellybeans.

This recipe, submitted by CKD patient and chef Duane Sunwold, is healthy for those on dialysis and those with diabetes or a kidney transplant.  For more kidney-friendly recipes, visit the Kidney Kitchen.
