Dietitians meet to talk kidney nutrition

The NKF-MD and the Maryland Council on Renal Nutrition co-hosted the biannual Renal Nutrition Conference on May 12 at the Ten Oaks Ballroom and Conference Center in Clarksville, Md.

Some 91 dietitians came to hear speakers and earn eight continuing education credits for the day, according to Brenda Falcone, NKF-MD's director of patient and community services.

NKF-MD is grateful to its sponsors for their generous support: Abbott Renal Care, AMGEN, Fresenius Medical Care, Genzyme, Pentec Health and University of Maryland Medical System. Additional vendors were: Hillestad Pharmaceuticals, Northern Pharmacy, Nutrepletion, Shire and Square One Medical.

In addition to providing a day of learning and collegial fellowship for dietitians, the event added more than $7,000 to the fund that NKF-MD uses to assist financially stressed dialysis patients with severe nutritional needs.

This year's event was the largest conference in recent years, Falcone said, and much credit should go to the event co-chairs, dietitians Christine Leodler and Karen Marino.
